George McKinney,
Resident of the Month
George McKinney was born on
May 21, 1921, on a small farm north
east near Rombauer, Mo., to Allonzo
and Elizabeth Carl McKinney. The
family had a large orchard with a variety
of fruits and berries. The McKinney
family grew most of their own vegetables
and raised cows, pigs, sheep, horses,
chickens and geese. There was never a
dull moment on the farm!
During the Great Depression,
George attended a one-room school,
where he did janitorial work for $3 an
hour. During his freshman and sophomore
years in school, George would walk
three miles to Rombauer High. Then,
during his junior and senior years,
George was able to travel by school bus
to Fisk High School.
After graduation, George worked in
the construction industry. During that
time he met his wife, Ruby Graham
from Cape Giradeau, Mo. They were
married on August 28, 1942. Shortly
after the couple married, George was
drafted into the U.S. Army.
Over the years, George has owned
several small businesses. After retiring
in 1994, he enjoyed spending time gardening, hunting, feeding the wild deer
and turkeys and “coffeeing” with the
boys.
At the age of 27, George was baptized
and save. He spent more than 50 years
teaching Sunday school to various age
groups, and he currently is a member
of Heritage Baptist Church.
Together, George and Ruby had
two wonderful daughters: Evelyn
Jenet and Lillian Carol. Sadly,
both have lost battles with cancer.
George has also been blessed with
five grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and 3 great-great
grandchildren. After nearly 71
years of marriage, Ruby passed
away in 2013.
Last year, George made Butterfield
Residential Care Center his new
home. Today, he spends his free
time enjoying activities like exercise,
socials, and bingo.
George’s friendliness, genuine
concern for others and positive
attitude are a blessing to all those
around him! Congratulations on
being selected as BRCC’s Resident
of the Month.
