Advance Health Care Directives
The Missouri state law requires that facilities like Butterfield Residential Care
Center are required to annually provide information to each resident, as
well as his or her family member, regarding Advance Health Care
Directives, residents’ rights to make treatment decisions, and state laws
related to advance healthcare decision-making. The enclosed
information provides reference to these topics. In no way does it imply
that decisions have been made or need to be made for your loved one.
Advance Health Care Directive is a term that describes three types of
legal documents including Statutory Living Will, Durable Power of
Attorney for Healthcare and Statutory Living Will. These documents
provide instructions about future medical care in the event a person is
unable to participate in his or her medical decisions due to serious
illness or incapacity. An Advance Health Care Directive communicates
and expresses an individual’s healthcare treatment wishes in the event
they are no longer able to communicate.
It is also important to mention that Advance Health Care Directives do
NOT include a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) request. A DNR request is an
order written by a physician instructing health care providers not to at-
tempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when a person’s heart and
breathing stops. If a Butterfield resident’s heart and breathing stop, and
he or she does not want CPR, he or she must have a DNR request.
