Suellen was born on Sept. 12, 1940, to Felton and Thelma Saylors in Austin, Texas. Suellen grew up with two brothers and one sister. When Suellen was 6, her family moved to Hobbs, N.M., where her father worked in the oil fields. Suellen has fond memories of running from the tumbleweeds while she walked to school. Her dad had joked that they would eat her and she believed him. After living in New Mexico’s hot sand and desolation for three years, the family was ready for a change and moved to Ft. Worth, Texas. Suellen’s dad had various jobs throughout the years including owning and operating a furniture store and a car lot. For several years, he was employed by Dumas Milner Chevrolet. Suellen’s mother worked at a bakery and as a nurse’s aide. After completing her sophomore year in high school, Suellen married Douglas Tidwell. The couple was blessed with one son, Danny. Unfortunately, when Suellen was only 21, Douglas was killed in a car accident. Eventually, Suellen decided to remarry. She and her husband, Billy Rose, had three children: Billy, who currently lives in Tennessee; Larry (deceased) and Darla (deceased). After her marriage to Billy Rose ended, she moved to Grand Prairie. While there, Suellen was recognized and on several occasions was awarded the “Yard of the Month.” Suellen married, Charles Thomas, and together they were blessed with one child, Todd, who now is deceased. At the age of 42, Suellen returned to school. After a lot of hard work and dedication, she received her GED. Throughout her life, Suellen has worked as a nurse’s aid, as a timekeeper at AMC Air Conditioning and for the Justin Boot Company. Of all her jobs, her most fulfilling was raising her five children. Suellen has since been blessed with five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of whom she adores. In 2007, Suellen relocated to Bolivar to be near her son, Danny. In 2013, she moved to BRCC where she stays active by participating in exercises, games, church, socials, outings and visiting with friends, Thank you, Suellen for sharing your story.
