Ray Fleeman,
Resident of the Month
Congratulations to Ray Fleeman on being se-
lected the resident of the month for December.
Ray George Fleeman was born Feb. 22, 1929, in
Fair Play, Mo., to Clyde and Mary Butler Flee-
man. Ray attended the Fair Play school district
until the family moved to Bear Creek, Mo. He
graduated from Bear Creek High School in 1946.
During Ray’s senior year of high school, he was
playing basketball at Stockton, Mo. He was play-
ing for the Bear Creek team and a young lady
named Pauline Phipps was a cheerleader for the
Stockton high school team. The two met at that
game and began dating. They became high school
sweethearts and after graduation in 1946 ,the cou-
ple got married.
The couple moved to Fair Play, and Ray
worked at a grocery store. They would later move
to Ozark, Mo., where he went to work at BBM
Lumberyard. In 1951, Ray joined the U.S. Navy
and was a Quarter Master Petty Officer 2nd Class.
He served in the Korean Conflict where he
worked in visual communication, navigation, and
steering the ship. He was in active service until
1955. He then continued to be in the naval reserve
for 4 years.
After returning from service, the couple moved
to Lebanon, Mo., and Ray worked at the BBM
Lumberyard. They would later move to Spring-
field where Ray earned an accounting degree from
the Draughn Business College. He then worked
for a manufacturing company and was an office
manager for an oil company. Ray then accepted a
position for the United States Postal Service and
worked for the next 34 years, until his retirement
in 1994.
Ray and Pauline were blessed with two chil-
dren, Sue Ellen and Scott. They have shared many
wonderful memories together as a family. Ray and
Pauline were married for 60 wonderful years
before she passed away in 2006. Ray enjoys
spending time with his children and their spouses:
Sue Ellen and husband, Glenn, who live in
Springfield and Scott and his wife, Thea, who live
in Strafford, Mo.
Ray’s hobbies have included fishing, hunt-
ing and being involved with his church. He
served as a greeter, Sunday school teacher,
and Sunday school superintendent. He is a
member of the Bolivar Christian Church.
Ray is a lifetime member of the DAV and a
member of the Postmaster organization.
He has been a huge Missouri Tiger football
fan since 1956 and has enjoyed following
the team to watch them play all across the
U.S., including California, Colorado, Ten-
nessee and Louisiana. He even was able to
follow them to Hawaii.
Ray moved to Butterfield in 2016. Ray’s
favorite activities at Butterfield are the mu-
sic groups, church services, socials, and
men’s lunch. He also enjoys reading, work-
ing puzzles, watching football, and spend-
ing time with his special friend, Linda
Bigler. The couple met at church and have
enjoyed their special friendship for the past
6 years.
