Beulah Watkins,
Resident of the Month
Congratulations to Beulah Watkins on
being selected as Resident of the Month!
Beulah was born on Dec. 1, 1922, near Fair
Play, Mo., to Jesse and Elsie Hartley Lower.
Beulah was the oldest of nine children. Her
five brothers Bernard, John, James “Dick”,
Fred and Larry, and three sisters Bertha,
Betty and Ann, all shared the work of the
family’s farm.
Beulah attended Potts School through the
eighth grade. It was a rural school and she
walked two miles each day to attend. In 1941
she graduated from Fair Play High School
and then attended what is now Missouri State
University where she took business courses
for one year.
After Beulah completed her business
courses, she worked for the Polk County
Extension Service. Eventually she had the
opportunity to work for the U.S. Department
of Agriculture. She worked as a secretary and
bookkeeper for the Department’s Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation Service
(ASCS) in Bolivar.
Beulah met Billy Watkins on VJ Day (on
Aug. 14, 1945, Japan surrendered in WWII
and it was celebrated as VJ Day - Victory
over Japan). Billy had served in the U.S.
Army for four years and had been recently
released when Beulah met him. He was from
Flemington, Mo., and after his military release had come back home to stay with his
parents and was working for Southwest
Electric Cooperative.
Beulah and Billy were married on Dec. 30,
1945. They were blessed with 65 and a half
years of marriage before Billy passed away in
2011. Beulah and Billy continued to live in
Bolivar until Billy was asked to open a new
Southwest Electric office in Preston, Mo.
Beulah assisted Billy with that process and
they worked in the Preston office and lived in
that area until 1954. They moved back to
Bolivar and built a house. Beulah went back
to work at the ASCS office and Billy
continued working at Southwest Electric, eventually becoming the assistant
manager.
After retirement, the Watkins built a
lake house on Pomme De Terre Lake
where they enjoyed hosting boating,
skiing, picnics, and dinners for their
family and friends several times each
year. They did not have children, but
enjoyed their many nieces and nephews.
Retirement also brought traveling
opportunities to the Watkins. They visited places including Alaska, Canada,
Mexico, Israel, Egypt, Australia (their
favorite), Tahiti, New Zealand, Hawaii
and Costa Rica. They traveled to all of
the 50 states with the exception of New
Jersey and New York.
Beulah moved to Butterfield in 2015
and enjoys daily chair exercises, paddleball, bingo and music. She brings joy
to all around her. We are blessed she is
a part of our Butterfield family.
Thank you for sharing your story
with us Beulah!
