Betty Crabtree,
Resident of the Month
Betty Crabtree was born April 12, 1940,
in Newton, Iowa, to Carl and Crystal Cra-
dy. Betty had five brothers and one sister.
She remembers when her dad would give
each of them 25 cents on payday. They
would join the neighborhood kids at the gas
station store and buy candy and popcorn for
a nickel. They also loved going to the com-
munity barn dances and watched the adults
square dance, while sitting above in the
hayloft.
After Betty graduated from high school
in 1958, she worked as the head cook at
Smith’s Restaurant in Newton. When she
turned 21, she and her friends visited the
bar where Ray Crabtree was working as the
bartender. He bought Betty’s first drink.
Ray and Betty were married on May 19,
1961 and moved the very next day to Lin-
coln, Nebraska, where Ray began a new
job. Eventually Ray became a foreman with
the Burlington Northern Railroad. They
moved to Wymore, Nebraska in 1971 and
then to Alliance, Nebraska in 1975.
On Oct. 19, 1964, Betty and Ray’s son,
Curtis “Curt” Ray Crabtree, was born. Bet-
ty was a stay-at-home mom until Curt was
older and had lots of fun being a Boy Scout
leader. She then began working for Wool-
rich where she made down-filled coats.
Curt currently lives in Alliance with his
daughters, Macy and Carissa, and works for
Burlington Northern.
When Ray and Betty retired in 1988 the
couple moved to Hermitage, Missouri, and
enjoyed fishing at Pomme De Terre Lake.
Every year lots of people would look for-
ward to Betty and Ray’s annual “garage
sale,” where they would sell the stuffed
animals, dolls and doll furniture they hand-
made. Ray and Betty also enjoyed playing
bingo. Betty even “hit the jackpot” one day
when she won a $2500 cash prize!
When Ray and Betty moved to
Hermitage they became close friends
with the Kennedy family and
“adopted” them as their own family.
Betty spent many years babysitting the
Kennedy kids, Sara and Canon. Both
currently reside in Texas. Their moth-
er, Sheila, lives in Buffalo, Missouri.
Ray passed away in 2016 and
shortly after Betty moved to Butter-
field Residential Care Center in 2017.
She enjoys living at Butterfield and
calls it her home. She has enjoyed
making a lot of good friends and has
sadly lost good friends, too. While
living at Butterfield, Betty has been
active in bingo, been a charter member
of the “Hat Club” and has even starred
as Minnie Pearl! She recently repre-
sented Butterfield at the MHCA Ms.
Nursing Home Pageant in Springfield,
Missouri. Her fun-loving personality
brings joy to all those around her.
