She was the only child of her parents, Orby and Edna Jenkins. When Daphne was eight years old, she and her family moved to Cedar Co., where she attended Hartley Grade School. In 1945, Daphne graduated from Fair Play High School. After graduation, Daphne worked at Union National Bank in Springfield. At that time, it was the largest bank in the Springfield area. She worked there until 1947, when she married Frank Wallen. Daphne had known Frank since she was a child, but it wasn’t until he returned from serving in the U.S. Army during WWII that they began dating. After the couple married, Daphne and Frank moved to California. It wasn’t long before the couple returned to Missouri. Upon their return, Frank and Daphne lived on a farm in Cedar County where they raised Black Angus cattle and turkeys. Frank ran the farm while also working for the Fair Play Post Office. Daphne worked at a bank in Fair Play. After several years, she took a job with Commerce Bank, where she remained for more than 20 years. In 1984, Daphne was able to retire. After their retirement, Daphne and Frank enjoyed traveling, visiting numerous states, including Alaska. Daphne and Frank have been blessed with two daughters: Velma and Wilma. Velma currently lives in Springfield with her husband, George Ashley, and Wilma lives in Fair Play with her husband, Charles Branstetter. Daphne is a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Last year, Daphne joined the family at Butterfield Residential Care Center and blesses everyone with her friendship. Congratulations Daphne for being chosen as Butterfield Residential Care Center’s Resident of the Month for August! Thank you for sharing your story and your smile with us.
