From, All of us at Butterfield Evelyn Golston, Resident of the Month Evelyn Florence Golston was born July 8, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Everett and Sybil Golston. Evelyn was named after her grandmothers and was the third of ten children who include; Ward Thomas (Sedalia, Missouri), Dolores Irene (deceased), Gary Everett (Lebanon, Missouri) and twin Jerold Evan “Jerry” (Frisco, Texas) , Brenda Gail (Birmingham, Alabama), Barbara Anne (deceased), Beverly Kay (Bolivar), Glatha Jean (Preston, Missouri) and Cynthia Lea (Ozark, Missouri). Jobs were hard to find during Evelyn’s childhood and when she was a baby, the family moved to Sandusky, Ohio and then eventually to Wayne, Michigan (near Detroit) where her dad found work. During WWII he worked at the Bendix Corporation and was offered a position in New Jersey when the war ended, but instead decided to buy a 160- acre farm in Macks Creek, Mis- souri, where Evelyn’s mother was raised. Evelyn was 11 years old when the family made the move to Macks Creek. They were used to electricity and indoor plumbing and had none of that on the farm, but were excited and adjusted well to the different lifestyle. Evelyn has special memories of farm life including mak- ing molasses, horseback riding and swinging on the grapevine into the swimming hole. This was especially fun when the cousins from the city visited! She also has memories of blackberry picking and canning. Evelyn once canned 500 quarts of blackberries in one summer and has never lost recognition of that feat! Evelyn at- tended a one room school, Hickory Grove, and then attended Macks Creek High School where she was on the basketball team and graduated in 1952. After high school, Evelyn moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and began working for the Royal Typewriter Company. The company began with portable and manu- al typewriters and by the time Evelyn retired, after 42 years of service, they had changed several owners and became the Konica Copier Company. Evelyn was only 59 when she retired and decided she would try a different job. She began working at the Jackson County Family Court and worked there for ten years. She loved the job and stayed there longer than she planned. Upon retire- ment she moved to Mission, Kansas. Evelyn was a member of the Broadway Church in Kansas City for many years and enjoyed the Swedish traditions of the church members. She has shared many memories with her close friends who’ve been coined the “group of eight.” There were four girls and four guys and two of the girls married two of the guys so half of the group became couples! They enjoyed going to football games together, celebrating each other’s birth- days at fancy restaurants, attending live theater and watching the Kansas City Philharmonic Or- chestra perform. Evelyn also enjoyed cooking and hosting dinners and was always collecting reci- pes. She never married and remained single which gave her the opportunity to collect many friends! Evelyn also had the opportunity to travel to several places including Canada where she “rode the rails” and saw glaciers. She also went to Europe where she traveled to nine countries in 22 days. She has fond memories of the beautiful European scenes including the country of Portugal and the Isle of Capri. In 2018, Evelyn moved to Butterfield from Mission, to be closer to family. Her kind spirit is a blessing to us all. Thank you for sharing your story with us, Evelyn. We are thrilled to have you as a part of our Butterfield family!
