Mary Lou Simmons,
Resident of the Month
Congratulations to Mary Lou Simmons
on being selected as April’s Resident of
the Month!
Mary Lou was born on February 23,
1931, in Fair Play, Mo. She had two older brothers, Ezra and Ray, both of Bolivar. She fondly remembers chasing them
across the field and kicking them in the
shins. It’s been a long time since they’ve
all lived in the same town and they’re
enjoying every minute of it.
Their parents, Clyde and Mary Fleeman,
owned a grocery store in Fair Play. The
family eventually sold the store and
moved to Bear Creek, Mo. Mary Lou
graduated from Bear Creek High in
1948.
In 1951, Mary Lou married Herbert
Simmons. Surprisingly, Herbert’s parents lived just down the road from Mary
Lou’s house. Herbert had been serving in
the U.S. Army when Mary Lou’s family
moved in. It wasn’t until he had returned
and was driving his hot rod that the two
met.
Shortly after they were married, Mary
Lou and Herbert, moved to Wichita,
Kan. While there, Herbert worked for
Boeing and in the heavy construction
industry.
Mary Lou and Herbert were blessed
with four wonderful daughters: Kathy
Curl and Patty Hunt (Springfield, Mo.);
Betty Snodgrass (Olathe, Kan.); and
Bonnie (deceased). Mary Lou has 11
grandchildren, seven great grandchildren
and 1 great-great grandchild, all of who
she adores.
In 1965, Mary Lou and Herbert
returned to Fair Play. Herbert helped
build Stockton Dam, worked for
Stockton Ready Mix and owned a
bulldozer service. Mary Lou worked
at the Bolivar Garment Factory for
more than 20 years.
Mary Lou enjoyed caring for her
children, sewing, playing the piano
and cards. Sunday’s were always a
special days for the family. Mary
Lou’s daughters would sing in
church while Mary Lou accompanied them on the piano. After
church, Mary Lou made her famous
fried chicken and pies or cobblers.
In 2014, Mary Lou made Butterfield her home. Today, She enjoys
parties, Bingo, music and has discovered her artistic skills in the
weekly art class. Thank you for
sharing you story with us Mary Lou!
We are blessed to have you as part
of our Butterfield family.
