Butterfield Rd., Bolivar, MO 65613, 417-326-5200 L u e l l a J u m p s , R e s i d e n t o f t h e M o n t h Luella Jumps was born Dec. 7, 1933, in Fair Play, Missouri. Luella was the oldest of Peck and Jessie Harville Copeland’s three children. Luella had a sister, Dixie, and a brother, Bobbie. Peck worked as a truck driver and drove the school bus. Jessie worked at the grocery store in Fair Play. Luella and her brother and sister were always sure to get up early and get their chores done so they could ride with their dad to school and not have to walk. Luella graduated from Fair Play High School in 1950 as salutatorian of her class. Shortly after graduation, she married Paul Collins and began working at the Fair Play Bank. One morning, when she arrived at the bank to begin her shift, she was surprised to greet the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The bank had been robbed the night before and the FBI was investigating it. Part of the investigation included getting Luella’s fingerprints. To this day she jokes that “the FBI has my fingerprints!” Luella and Paul moved to Kansas City. She worked at Hallmark Cards and he worked for the Highway department. The couple eventually returned to the Ozarks and settled in Marshfield. They were blessed with three wonderful children, Sherry, Susan and Stephen. All three graduated from Marshfield High School. Stephen continues to live in Marshfield; Sherry lives in Broken Arrow Oklahoma with her husband; Susan Mattox sadly passed away earlier this year after living in Ash Grove, Missouri for several years. When the kids were young, Luella would ride her horse every morning before taking the children to the babysitter and going to work. One morning Luella didn’t come back from her ride. The babysitter eventually came to the house and found her in the field. The horse had thrown Luella off and she landed on a pile of rocks which broke her back! She recovered, but had to wear a brace for three months. Luella had several jobs throughout her life, but she most enjoyed working at the bank. She worked at Citizens State Bank in Marsh- field for many years. When she retired, she and her second husband, Roy Jumps, moved back to Luella’s old stomping grounds and enjoyed living on the farm in Aldrich, Missouri. They also enjoyed traveling and went on several bus tours together. For many years Luella enjoyed crocheting and has made countless afghans, dollies and handkerchiefs. She taught her daughters how to sew and helped them with their 4-H projects. She has had a life-long love for horses and always enjoyed going to horse shows. She also loves to shop and has collected some neat things along the way! After Roy passed away in 2017, Luella moved to CMH’s Butterfield Apartments. In 2019, Luella moved to Butterfield Residential Care Center where she has enjoyed playing bingo, attending parties and meeting new friends. She is reminded of good memories when she looks over into the park. For many years, she spent her Sunday afternoons eating lunch in the Dunnegan Park with her family. Thank you for sharing your story with us Luella. You are a blessing to all of us! We are delighted to have you as part of our Butterfield family.
