Alberta Goodwin was born Oct . 11 , 1925 , to Louis and Grace Armstrong in Los Angeles , California . Alberta ’ s older brother , Delbert , was 18 years old when she was born . Living in a big city , the family enjoyed electricity , indoor plumbing and sliced bread long before many other families . She has fond memories of spending her childhood Saturdays with piano lessons , delicious hamburgers at the café and matinee shows at the theater . Alberta ’ s paternal grandmother lived in Waynoka , Oklahoma , and when she became frail , Alberta ’ s parents decided to move there to assist in her care . When her grandmother passed away , Alberta and the family moved to Lytle , Texas near San Antonio . Alberta attended Lytle High School where she met her future husband , Ezell Goodwin . Alberta and Ezell played tennis together at the school and also enjoyed music classes together . Ezell played the saxophone and Alberta played the trumpet . Alberta graduated from Lytle High School at the age of 16 !
After high school , Alberta continued her education at Incarnate Word College where she studied to become a nurse . She earned a bachelor ’ s of science in nursing and became a registered nurse . After graduation she and Ezell married and moved to Long Beach , California , where Ezell was hired to work at the military airport and Alberta worked at the Orange County Hospital . Ezell became a pilot , and eventually a lieutenant , in the U . S . Airforce , which led him , Alberta and their three boys , Terry , Michael and Tony , to lead a very interesting life filled with international travel .
When the children were still very young , Alberta and Ezell lived in Japan and then the Philippines , and all the while , Alberta continued to work as a nurse at the military base hospitals in these countries . Alberta and Ezell traveled all over the world and had experiences in several countries including Germany , France and other European destinations . They visited Israel and celebrated Easter near what is said to be Jesus ’ tomb . Alberta was asked by the University of Missouri to travel to Russia where she spent several weeks learning about the country ’ s health care resources . She also has fond memories of a six week train ride they took in which the train travel up the west coast .
When Ezell retired , he and Alberta purchased a 500 acre farm near Warrensburg , Missouri . Alberta worked at Whiteman Airforce Base Hospital and raised poodles . Ezell raised Hereford cattle . Eventually , they settled in Stockton , Missouri ,
where they finished raising their boys and adopted ( at the age of 58 ) their daughter , Vanessa . Alberta worked as the school nurse and assisted Ezell with their cheese factory . The couple , as employees of the U . S . Department of Agriculture at the time , traveled to the landlocked country Estonia to provide education about cheese factory sterilization . Overtime , Ezell collected three airplanes and he and Alberta made several trips visiting different locations throughout the United States . Alberta and Ezell then eventually moved to Bolivar , Missouri .
In 2019 , Alberta moved to Butterfield where she has enjoyed what she explains as a more relaxed lifestyle where she has time to read the books and watch the shows she wanted to enjoy in the past , but couldn ’ t because she was too busy working . She stays busy keeping in touch with her children and grandchildren . Son , Terry , and wife , Pat live in Pleasant Hope , Missouri . Son , Michael , and wife , Janice , live in Phoenix , Arizona . Son , Tony , and wife , Linda , live in Morrisville , Missouri . Daughter , Vanessa , and husband , Umberto , live in Houston , Texas . Alberta is also proud of her five wonderful grandchildren .
