Betty Finch was born July 23 , 1933 , in Clark Lake , Michigan , to Claude and Muriel Preston . Betty was the youngest child and had an older brother , Ray , and older sister , Jennie . Ray was 17 years old and Jennie was 8 years old when Betty was born . Betty has fond childhood memories of swimming in the spring-fed Clark Lake , the town ’ s namesake . She attended a two-room school through the eighth grade and then attended Cement City High School .
Betty was working at an ice cream parlor , “ The Berg ,” when she met Howard Finch . Howard had just returned from a four year service in the United States Navy . The same day she met him , she came home and told her mother , “ I met the man I ’ m going to marry .” Her mother quickly became fond of him , too , and Betty remembers how she made fried donuts for him often . Betty ’ s prediction was right and she and Howard were married in 1950 ! The couple celebrated a total of 67 years of marriage .
Howard began a career with Consumer ’ s Power , a power company that provided service throughout the state of Michigan . He began as a lineman and worked his way into engineering , then into marketing and eventually became a plant manager . His job required moving to different locations throughout the state so he and Betty moved several times .
Betty ’ s career endeavors included completing cosmetology school and owning and operating a beauty shop for fifteen years . She also worked in and managed fabric stores . For seven years she taught decorative painting classes .
Betty and Howard were blessed with three amazing sons , Mark , J . C . and Jim . Mark currently lives in Stockton , Missouri . J . C , and his wife , Joann , wife , live in Sturgis , Michigan . Jim and wife , Penni , live in Fife Lake , Michigan . Betty is also blessed with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren . When Betty and Howard retired , they moved to central Florida and lived there for 20 years . Betty ’ s favorite Florida location
was Ocala where they lived on the golf course and enjoyed lots of fun people and activities . During that time she enjoyed being a leader of WHO ( Women Helping Others ) and sewed , crocheted and knitted several items for children in need .
Betty is a talented seamstress and has sewn all of her life . She began quilting only a few years ago , but in that time has created some outstanding quilts ! Recently , she made masks for all her grandkids . She and Howard also enjoyed the hobby of air travel and owned a small plan . Although Betty has completed many things on her bucket list , including riding in a helicopter and flying a glider , she has yet to ride in a hot air balloon !
Betty and Howard eventually moved to Bolivar , to be closer to family . With all the moves in Michigan , Florida and Missouri , Betty and Howard lived in 19 different homes !
In 2019 , Betty moved to Butterfield . She has made several new friends at the facility and continues to enjoy creating things with her sewing machine , crocheting for Newborns in Need , playing bingo and much more . Her kind and fun spirit bless all those around her ! Thank you for sharing your story with us Betty !
