Joyce Scott was born March 5 , 1929 , in Tingley , Iowa , to Wayne and Ellen Overholtzer . When Joyce was seven years old , her brother , Dwayne , was born . She has fond memories of traveling in the summertime with her family . Her dad was a rural mail carrier and had the opportunity to take an extended vacation each summer . They would stay in motels and with friends they had made throughout the country . When Joyce was three years old , the family was visiting the White House in Washington , D . C ., and Joyce got to shake President Hoover ’ s hand in his office ! Joyce eventually traveled to each of the fortyeight contiguous states . Her travels included meeting other presidents , but she didn ’ t have to travel far when she met President George H . W . Bush when he traveled to Bolivar , Missouri . While serving him food , she met him face to face !
In 1948 , Joyce graduated from Tingley High School and continued her education at Iowa State Teacher ’ s College . She attended the college for one year before receiving her teaching certification and then taught school for one year .
In 1949 , Joyce married O ’ Neal Scott . The couple had known each other for several years before they were married . He was 10 years her senior and , not only did they both attend the First Christian Church of Tingley , but he also owned and operated the filling and service station that Joyce frequented . She always thought he was handsome and would purposely deflate the tires on her bicycle so that she had to bring it to the station for him to fix ! During WWII , O ’ Neal served in the U . S . Army and when he returned , he and Joyce had the opportunity to be together and get married . Shortly after they were married , Joyce and O ’ Neal moved to Springfield , Missouri . O ’ Neal , along with his father , had purchased the Snow White Lodge in Springfield . It was what was then called a “ Tourist Court ” and was located on the famous Route 66 . Joyce cleaned the stone cabins and facilities daily .
The couple then began their family and welcomed their first child in 1951 . After owning the Snow White Lodge for seven years , they sold it and purchased a 160-acre farm on the northwest side of Bolivar . Their family continued to grow , and they were blessed with a total of seven children with the youngest born in 1963 .
Even as a girl , Joyce wanted a large family . She accomplished that and had a child for each day of the week ! Her children include Vickie ( Terry ) Sowers , David ( Revonda ) Scott , Debbie Jenkins , Steve ( Kathy ) Scott , Becky ( Tim ) Bolin , Tim ( Patsy ) Scott , and Lisa ( Danny ) Cowden . With the exclusion of Debbie , who lives in Kansas City , Missouri , all the other children live within a one mile radius of each other on the original farm Joyce and O ’ Neil purchased . Joyce now also has 13 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren .
Once all the kids started school , Joyce got a job at Tap Jack Lumberyard in Bolivar . She worked there for 20 years as a bookkeeper and remained busy with her hobbies including crocheting , knitting and cooking . Joyce ’ s grandparents were born in Holland and she continued preparing several of the Dutch recipes they brought with them from their homeland . The Dutch almond icebox cookies shaped as Santa , the family ’ s Santa Claus Cookies , are a Christmas tradition . Sla en aardappelen or “ lettuce and potatoes ” is another favorite Dutch recipe . Joyce was especially busy in the kitchen at Christmas time making delicious candy including divinity , fudge , brittle , dipped chocolates and much more . Joyce has also been an active member of the First Christian Church in Bolivar since the early 1950s .
Joyce moved to Butterfield in 2019 . We are grateful to have her as part of our Butterfield family . Thank you for sharing your story with us Joyce !
