Howard Robbins was born April 25 , 1927 , in Omaha , Nebraska , to Howard and Vivian Pate Robbins . Howard ’ s father worked as a trust auditor for Omaha National Bank . Howard had two younger brothers , Bill and Jack . Bill has passed away and Jack lives in Los Angeles , California .
Howard recalls being interested in mechanic things even as a young boy and , after attending Omaha Public Schools since kindergarten , it was fitting that he graduated from Omaha Technical High School in January 1945 . This experience granted him an apprenticeship with Schneider Electric where he learned a lot about fixing appliances , transformers , motors , generators , etc . Directly after high school graduation , Howard enlisted in the U . S . Navy . He served on the battleship , U . S . S . Iowa , and sailed to Japan while serving as one of the ship ’ s electricians .
WWII ended and in 1946 , Howard came home and began working at Schneider Electric . Before his Navy service , he had met Arline Andersen on a hayride hosted by a friend . Arline was Howard ’ s friend ’ s sister and he arranged for them to go on a date . Their relationship endured Howard ’ s time in the service ( Arline wrote to him nearly everyday !) and the couple were married in 1947 . They enjoyed 70 years of marriage before Arline passed away in 2017 .
Howard eventually began working at the Northwest Bell Telephone Company and he and Arline bought a home in Omaha , Nebraska . Howard remodeled that home four times ! In 1950 , they started a family when their first son was born . The couple were blessed with three amazing sons , Larry , Dale and Joe . Larry and wife , Kimber , currently live in Cookson , Oklahoma . Joe and wife , Joan , reside in Omaha . Dale sadly passed away in 2019 . His wife , Shari , currently lives on Lake Pomme de Terre right next door to Howard ’ s lake house .
After working for the telephone company for 37 years , Howard retired in 1984 . He and Arline moved to Estes Park , Colorado . They lived close to Rocky Mountain National Park and elk would visit their front yard ! Together they enjoyed hiking and Arline loved photography . In1996 , they moved to Elkhorn ,
Nebraska and lived there until 2008 , when they moved to Lake Pomme De Terre .
Howard has had many interests throughout his life , some of which ( guns and knives ) he jokingly says have made him a “ bad boy .” Ha ! Ha ! For many years he was involved in competition shooting . He shot mostly pistols , but also rifles , and always loaded his own ammo . He also picked up the trade of knife making and in 1975 , began Robbins Custom Knives . He traveled all over the country selling knives at shows and also filled many mail orders . He even sold a knife to the nephew of the Dalai Lama in Tibet ! Howard was also interested in radio transmission and made his own HAM radio and transmitter . He also obtained a commercial radio engineer licensee . Howard ’ s workshop full of tools is his most desirable place to be !
In January 2020 , Howard moved to Butterfield . He has made several friends while living here and enjoys bingo and socials . He loves to read and is either seen with a book or Sudoku puzzle in his hands . Thank you for sharing your story with us Howard ! We are blessed to have you as part of our Butterfield family .
