Marvel Surrette was born Aug . 27 , 1930 , in Lafayette County , Mississippi , to Wesson and Zella Austin . Marvel ’ s sister , Joyce , was two years older than her and Marvel fondly remembers her as a straight-A student and math whiz . The family lived on the farm and Wesson hired sharecroppers to help him work it . He also worked for the United States Department of Agriculture . His job required him to visit several farms , most of which grew the area ’ s cash crops of sweet potato and cotton . The family was very involved in their church and community . They traveled to their church , Pilgrim ’ s Rest Baptist Church , in Canola County , each Sunday and spent much of their time in that area .
Marvel graduated from Camp Ground High School in May 1947 . During her senior year , when she was 16 years old , she met G . H . Surrette . G . H . had just returned from his 18-month service in the U . S . Navy during World War II and was finishing his education . Marvel and G . H . were married on July 31 , 1947 .
G . H . continued his education and graduated from Union University in Jackson , Tennessee . The couple then moved to Texas where G . H . pastored churches and received his doctorate in Old Testament and Archeology . During this time , Marvel was a homemaker and was busy raising the couple ’ s three amazing children , Rene , Dewanna and Ronald .
Rene and husband , Steve , currently reside in Springfield , Missouri . Dewanna and husband , Adrian , reside in Mack ’ s Creek , Missouri . Sadly , Ronald passed away in an automobile accident when he was in high school in January 1975 . Marvel has fond memories of his academic success and kind spirit . Marvel ’ s family
has since grown to include four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren .
In 1966 , the family moved to Bolivar where GH taught Old Testament at Southwest Baptist University . Marvel returned to school and earned an education degree from SBU in 1974 . She taught 4 th grade at Pleasant Hope from 1974 until she retired in 1995 . She loved teaching fourth grade and remains in contact with some of her students . Once retired , Marvel enjoyed working in her garden and growing flowers . Marvel and G . H . celebrated 65 wonderful years of marriage before he died in January 2012
In 2019 , Marvel moved to Butterfield . She especially enjoys chair exercises and bingo . She is often seen walking the halls as she works to accomplish her daily walking goals . We are thrilled to have Marvel as part of our Butterfield family . Thank you for sharing your story with us Marvel !
