Royce Slagle was born May 23 , 1955 , in Ft . Scott , Kansas , to Roy “ Mac ” and Thelma Viola “ Susie ” McReynolds . Royce lived in Ft . Scott until she was five years old . It was during that time that her parents developed a close relationship with David Myers who was near the age of Royce . David became a brother-like figure to Royce and the two still talk today .
In 1960 , the McReynolds family moved first to Springfield and then to Bolivar , Missouri , to help open the store owned by their dearest friends , Delton and Lucretta Wade . The first Bolivar location of “ Wade ’ s Supermarket ” opened in what is now Rooster ’ s restaurant . Royce ’ s dad was the meat cutter and assistance manager . Royce has fond childhood memories of playing with the next door neighbors of the store , the Carsen family . They would walk the railroad tracks , explore , swim and fish at the lake . Royce and her parents attended and were members of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church . Royce is currently a member today ! Her dad was very involved in the church and was a Sunday school teacher , song leader and deacon .
Royce attended Bolivar Schools for the entirety of her education and graduated from Bolivar High School in 1973 . She worked at the Bolivar garment factory , Teter ’ s and Bass Pro . She also spent several years working in different capacities for the Fink family , including Country Classics Antiques Mall and the office of the residential development of Karlin Acres . Royce became the manager of the Fink ’ s motel , The Country Inn .
In 1974 , Royce married her first husband , Keith Matthews . She was blessed with two children , Jackson and Christie . In 1989 , she married Jerry Slagle and was blessed with her youngest son , Kyle . Royce ’ s kids are the light of her life ! Jackson Matthews and wife , Bekka , live in St . Joseph , Missouri , with their five children , Grayson , Camden , Madalynn , Paxton and Kathryn . Christie Foster and husband , Tony , live in Fair Play , Missouri with sons Gauge and Easton . Their oldest son , Joseph , is deceased . Kyle “ Toad ” Slagle and wife , Belle , and her children , Everett , Ethan and Molly , live in Bolivar .
For all of her life , Royce has been a sports enthusiast . In high school she loved roller skating and playing softball . She continues to love baseball , softball , basketball and especially soccer . She has coached many soccer teams including those of all three of her children . Both Christy and Kyle played on collegiate soccer teams . Royce began coaching at the youth Bolivar community soccer league and eventually coached in Springfield at Lake Country . She has coached indoor and outdoor soccer and has even coached her grandkid ’ s soccer teams !
Royce has continued to be very active throughout her life . She enjoys attending church , fishing at Pomme De Terre Lake , spending time with her family and watching sports ( she ’ s been an SBU Basketball season-ticket-holder for many years ). She is also extremely talented at crocheting and makes all kinds of things such as caps for newborns , afghans , stuffed animals , kitchen towels , shawls and many other items . She has a booth at Country Classics Antique Mall where her items can be purchased .
Royce moved to Butterfield in 2019 . She enjoys several group activities including daily chair exercises , Fun & Faith , Art Time and socials . She wants everyone to know how thankful she is for the Butterfield staff and residents . Thank you for sharing your story with us Royce ! We are thrilled to have you as part of our Butterfield family ! Your kindness and thoughtfulness brighten up our lives !
