Lucille’s older brother, M.W. , was born three and a half years before her and currently lives in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. The family lived in Fair Play for several years and Lucille attended the Fair Play school. Her mother was an extra hard worker and washed and ironed clothing for an income. Lucille attributes her own hard work ethic to her mother who set a great example. The family moved to Strasburg, Missouri, in 1948, and Lucille attended the school there for one year before she got married. She married Ben Lee and was blessed with two wonderful sons, Ben Lee, Jr., and William “Duane” Lee. Lucille raised her sons and lived in Pleasant Hill for thirty five years. Both Ben and Duane graduated from Pleasant Hill High School. Lucille eventually moved to the Kansas City, Missouri, area and lived in Lee’s Summit for 17 years. It was there that she met and married Bill Shay who was from Blue Springs. In 1964, Lucille earned her GED and began working for AT&T’s Western Electric. The company made telephone parts and she served several roles in the organization during her 22 year tenure with the company. She most enjoyed her job as an inspector. She retired in 1988, after AT&T restructured. After retirement she worked part time at Hobby Lobby, Dillard’s and Walmart. In 2002, Lucille moved back to the Bolivar area where she has enjoyed being close to her sons and grandchildren. Ben and his wife, Shirley, as well as Duane, reside in Dunnegan, Missouri. Lucille takes great pride and joy in her grandchildren. Her granddaughter, Linda Diane Miles, and her children, Kori LeeAnn and Kaleb Austin, live in Bolivar. Her granddaughter Sara Elizabeth Wilson currently resides in Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband who serves is the United States Air Force. They had previously been stationed in Okinawa, Japan, for five years. Lucille has been very involved in her church communities throughout her life. She has cultivated many friendships through these communities and has enjoyed maintaining them. When she moved to Bolivar in 2002, she became a member of Southern Hills Baptist Church. When Brother Gary Urich retired from his role as pastor, Lucille along with ten other Southern Hills members worked with Gary and Joe Coppage to establish Heritage Baptist Church. Lucille was a dedicated spokesman for the effort. This month, August 2020, Heritage is celebrating its 10 th anniversary. As a founding member, Lucille has experienced much reward and blessing watching the church flourish and grow. In 2019, Lucille moved to Butterfield. She has enjoyed making new friends and participating in various activities. We are thrilled to have you as part of our Butterfield family, Lucille. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
