Jim Dorweiler was born May 26 , 1936 , in northwestern Iowa to Frank and Mary Dorweiler . Mary was originally from southeastern Texas . Frank ’ s family had emigrated directly from Germany . Jim was the second oldest of nine children . He had six brothers and two sisters .
Jim grew up during WWII and his family moved several times during his childhood . He lived in Iowa , Texas , Arkansas and Missouri . He attended high school in Sedalia , Missouri . When Jim was just 17 years old , he joined the U . S . Air Force . He served from 1954 to 1957 , and was stationed for two of those years in what was then the Alaskan territory .
During his time in the Air Force , Jim received electronics training . When his active duty service ended , he began working as a customer service sale manager for the Berstein Applebee company in Kansas City , Missouri . They sold televisions , radios , amplifiers and several other electronic items . His electronics training was put to use !
Eventually Jim became an over-theroad truck driver and remained in that position for 20 years . He has been to each of the 48 contiguous states and has enjoyed seeing all the different areas of the country .
Once his parents needed help managing the family farm , he moved to the farm near Hartville , Missouri . He revolutionized the hog industry by combining three different breeds to form an extra meaty piglet . One that could be sold at five months old weighing 246
pounds . He also became a member of DHI ( Dairy Herd Improvement Association ).
For many years , Jim enjoyed bowling . He started bowling when he was in the military and continued to be in leagues for many years . During the 1960-61 season , he was the only one to bowl 300 points in a sanctioned game in the Kansas City area .
Jim has also been an avid reader throughout his life . During one year of high school , he read 240 books in study hall alone ! There isn ’ t a moment that you won ’ t catch him without a book in hand ! He enjoys several book genres , but Westerns are his favorite .
In 2019 , Jim moved to Butterfield . We are thrilled to have him as part of our Butterfield family and we thank him for sharing his story with us !
