LET THE SUN SHINE
ON OUR HAIR!
Anne Ferguson is a director of celebrity stylist Taylor
Ferguson Hairdressing. With summer upon us Anne examines
what’s good and not so good for our hair in the sun.
Whenever you come out of the water try to swim
and re-apply the protection products. Ideally?
Wear a hat and avoid the water wreaking havoc.
COLOUR ADVICE
If you have your hair highlighted or coloured
you may want to leave it up to 48 hours before
you head off into the sun. That gives it time to
“settle” and be at its optimum when you arrive
and unpack that suitcase, swimwear and your
very important sun protection.
INTENSIFY TO IMPROVE
Whenever you’re shampooing and conditioning
your hair pop on a plastic shower cap or a plastic
bag over your conditioned hair. The heat in the
shower and the plastic will help intensify and re-
moisture what can be extremely dried out hair
after sun exposure.
A CUT ABOVE
Ask your stylist for a new look before a holiday.
A sharp cut should make haircare easier and
quicker on your break – so you’ve more time to
kick back and relax. And if you opt for a major
change it gives you time to get used to the new
look. Your social media photos will be the subject
of much debate if you opt for a big difference.
PICK YOUR PRODUCTS
Always take a hair survival kit with you. Plan to
use specialist haircare products in the sun. They’ll
have UV filters and will offer that vital protection.
We love the Schwarzkopf BC Sun Protect Travel
Set – gives you three 100ml bottles of shampoo,
spray conditioner and shimmer oil and, as you
see from the photo, comes in a stylish bikini bag.
ALWAYS PROTECT
This is perhaps the most important piece of
advice I can share. You must consider your hair
and scalp as an extension of your face. It is –
so treat it as such and use a good quality hair
and scalp protector when you’re in the sun. If
you don’t then the sun’s damaging rays will play
havoc with your hair’s condition, its colour and
its overall appearance. Best advice? Wear a hat.
Won’t give 100% protection but it will assist in the
protection plan.
A KEY CONDITION
Another very important piece of advice in my
book. You simply must condition and protect
your hair whenever you’ve been swimming as
the sea salt or the chlorine will play havoc.
