SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT MARY MCLEOD BETHUNE EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT NURSERY An organization on a mission to provide a quality child development program that is affordable for parents who are working or pursuing their education in the Coastal Bend. M ary McLeod Bethune Early Child De- velopment Nursery, Inc., the oldest early child development agency in the Coastal Bend, was established in Feb- ruary of 1942. Bethune nursery is year round and operates Monday through Fri- day, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Annu- ally, Bethune serves over 300 children ranging in ages from birth to 12 years. In 2017, 329 children from 264 families were served with 268 children being low income and 47 children homeless/dis- placed. Our low income and homeless families are in great need of child care services. The operating expenses of quality child care is consistently rising and the need for parents, in order to secure jobs and job training, has grown.
