“We are completely self-sufficient, dependent
only on the availability of raw materials,” Derek
pointed out during a tour of the manufacturing
facility.
The business grew out of a mobile home sales
lot James operated on Southview Circle in Center
in the late 1960s. An attempt to manufacture
mobile homes in 1973 ran aground amidst
regulations, and James shifted to manufacturing
portable buildings marketed under the product
name of Port-O-Buildings. Starting in a small
building on Highway 7 east, the company
moved to its present location on Highway 87
west in 1983 where is the headquarters and
manufacturing facility is situated on twenty-six
acres and employees 105 people.
A map in the conference room pinpoints a
dealer network that sells in the four states area
of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
“But we have delivered buildings as far away as
Mississippi,” Derek said.
Asked what differentiates General Shelters
from their competitors, David responded,
“Staying ahead of the game. Being diversified.
