“But what people don’t understand is that if it’s copyrighted we
cannot do it. A lot of people are surprised about that,” she says.
This past fall she celebrated the bakery’s fifth anniversary.
“There are a lot of things about business which people don’t
understand until they get into it,” she says. One of the biggest
surprises for her has been overhead costs which go into operating
a business.
“Bookkeeping is my biggest challenge,” she says. “I can
take care of the cooking and decorating and all of that, but
bookkeeping is the biggest challenge. I’m a people person but
with bookkeeping, it’s just numbers.”
Sassy Red’s Bakery has showcased her skills at events like Taste
of the Holidays and by hosting events in conjunction with the
Shelby County Chamber of Commece like Business After Hours.
She has also hosted kids’ cookie decorating classes during the
holidays and classes over the summer and the shop has also hosted
author book signings.
