Over fresh homemade curd cheese with a
thick black mulberry marmalade (from the
garden of course), the double roasted sesame
paste mixed with homemade grape molasses
leaves a thick chocolate taste and freshly
picked crispy green peppers roasted on the
grill, aromatic herb salad, homemade rye
bread, five kinds of olives and of course rosy
tomatoes and eggs from the neighbour’s hen
completes the colour palette of our table.
Owing to its steep hills, yogurt, cheese, butter
and cream are made from goat’s milk. I now
understand what real no-additive organic
cheese tastes like; a strong smell with a sharp
taste. They have a system in the village; you get
a case of apples if your neighbour has it, you
may suddenly find a bin of goat’s milk at your
door or your door bell rings and there is a tray
of village bread cooked next door. Such is life
in Islamlar.
You never have to leave anyway as Utaş’s driver
is ready to get your shopping list completed for
you anytime you like. If you would like to taste
local food, you can arrange for a local lady to
come to your villa to cook for you; everything
from yoghurt soup to stuffed vine leaves, meat
and chick peas in a casserole and village bread
can be prepared for little money. You must try
the local tea house or chat with the local deli
and learn more about the region. Eating trout
at the restaurants situated by the water in the
middle of the village is a must too.
