Environment
efficiency will be the hallmark of all future
devices. •
•
Wind Power
Wind power has become the first choice of
the utility industry for a non-polluting energy
source. •
•
•
Solar Energy
Harnessing the light and heat from the sun
using technologies such as solar heating,
photovoltaics and solar thermal energy is a
highly appealing source of electricity.
Ways you can act now
Global warming could wipe out a
quarter of all animal species on
Earth by 2050
Daylight Harvesting
Through the use of lighting control systems
which are able to dim or switch off electric
lighting in response to different daylight
availability, daylight harvesting systems offset
the amount of electric lighting needed to
properly light a space and reduce energy
consumption.
Electric Vehicles
The advancement in electric vehicle technology
has been huge in recent years, resulting in
54
them being able to travel hundreds of miles off
one charge. In addition, performance of these
vehicles has significantly improved. Driving an
electric vehicle has a positive impact on both
the health and environment through reduced
emissions. In addition, running costs are
greatly reduced.
Green Computing
Computers made from recycled materials with
components designed for easy recycling will
dominate the IT products landscape. Energy
It is important to note that although the
problem of global economy is huge, each of us
can make a difference if we decide to refine
our lifestyle.
• Turn off other electrical things such as
televisions, stereos and radios when not
in use.

fertilizers and/or pesticides.
• Use recycled paper.
• Do not buy products which have been
made at the expense of the rainforest.
• Support products which come from the
rainforest but have not involved the cutting
down of trees.
• Plant trees.
• Avoid single use products
•
Buy products with little or no packaging.
Replace products such as bathroom
cleaners with homemade cleaning
products
Compost.
Buy recycled products.
Cut the plastic rings from soda cans before
throwing them away.
Spread the word, tell your friends and
colleagues the importance of going green.
Green Data
As the green movement grows in popularity,
the following facts and figures could open
more eyes to the growing problems related to
the environment.
1- It's not about whether we can do
something about global warming, but whether
we can afford to do nothing.
2- Global warming could wipe out a quarter
of all animal species on Earth by 2050.
3- It is time that people do not just think
"green" but put green into practice.
4- Each year, 1 million sea birds, 100,000
marine mammals and sea lions 50,000 die as
a result of eating or being strangled in plastic.
5- 84 percent of a typical household’s waste
includes food scraps, garden waste, paper,
cardboard, cans and bottles – which can be
recycled.
6- One litre of motor oil, if discarded
improperly can contaminate up to two million
gallons of fresh water.
7- Americans throw away about 40 billion
cans and bottles of soda each year. Placed
end to end, would reach the return almost 20
times moon.
We cannot continue to ignore the damage we
are doing to our planet, it is time to take action.
If each person makes a change to their lifestyle
taking into consideration the environment, we
can start to reverse that damage.
