Business The biggest challenge is to be able to lead yourself Who are you when nobody is watching? Are you the same person behind closed doors and in public? Do you wipe up a spilled coffee from the floor in the staff kitchen when nobody is there, or do you need an audience to give you credit for what you do? Living in integrity with your values and leading by example are the best and most effective ways to sustainably and successfully lead people with the best outcomes. 3. Take action – daily When you align what you believe and say, with what you do, you become powerful and unstoppable. The main difference between those people who are successful and those who are not, is that they live an intentional life and take daily actions which align with their values and vision. Leaders initiate and take action, followers react. A powerful mission and vision cannot make any impact if it remains a thought. Your daily actions will determine what kind of leader you will be and the outcomes you will have. John Maxwell said: we all have an uphill dream but oftentimes downhill habits. Self-leadership is about making ‘uphill’ decisions and backing them with measurable goals, daily action and self-discipline. 4. Develop a Leaders Mindset Your mind is the most powerful thing in the universe after God. Be careful what thoughts you allow into your mind because they run your life. A thought follows an emotion, action follows a thought and daily actions form habits which over time build your character. Therefore, do not conform to fear, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind. Just as leadership is influence, self-leadership is the ability to influence your own emotions, thoughts and behaviours, in order to achieve your goals and stay on track with your mission. A leader chooses good thoughts and positivity over fear, sees opportunity in failure and is guarding her mind of any thoughts that are not in integrity with her values. 5. Don’t wait for perfect conditions Self-leadership is something we each can take control of right here and now. Whether you are a stay home mother trying to follow your dream outside of the home, whether you are in a job, trying to start your own business or navigating through a difficult marriage, whether you are empowering thousands of people from a world stage or trying to prioritise as you are building a legacy – we are all given opportunities to lead throughout the seasons of our lives. Are you ready to follow your call to lead in your sphere of influence? Whoever can be trusted with little will be trusted with much. I know because I have been there. Time is our gift, that’s why it is called the present. Our continued growth and development critically rely on how we lead ourselves and any failure to lead ourselves first, will cripple the chances of leading and influencing others. If you don’t have a partner or friend who can help you with this, find a coach who keeps you accountable to fulfil your calling. So start right now, you’ve got this!
