So perhaps this year, we could ignore the
consumerism surrounding Valentine’s Day and
choose to do something meaningful and kind
to our environment.
Here are some ideas you could
try:
• Instead of going out to a restaurant, be
friendlier to the planet and your wallet
by cooking a romantic dinner at home.
Plan the menu and cook it together, while
enjoying a nice bottle of wine.
• Take some time to show love to people
who need it most. Take food, love and
donations to a homeless or animal shelter,
or a children’s home
• If you want to buy a gift for your loved one,
purchase from an organisation which gives
back, for example jewellery by AWE or
handcrafted gifts supporting local artisans
or those in developing countries.
• Instead of exchanging gifts, make a
donation in each other’s name, revealing
the cause on Valentine’s Day and telling
your loved one why it reminded you of him
or her.
• Hand make something for your loved
one, draw a picture, write a poem, whittle
something from wood, compose a song.
• Plant a tree – instead of taking from the
environment by giving paper cards, give
back by planting a tree.
• If you still want to buy chocolates, make
sure they are fair-trade.
• Rather than giving a bouquet of flowers,
buy a living plant and put it in a beautiful
pot.
• In lieu of buying a gift, plan a trip to a park
and enjoy a picnic
• Make your own homemade sweets or
biscuits in the shape of a heart.
• Create your own unique cards using
photos or other reusable or recyclable
items around your home or send an
e-card.
Whatever your plans for this Valentine’s Day,
take a moment to think about what it really
means, take a little bit extra time and make it a
special day by celebrating it with mindfulness
and care for our environment.
