04 Interview
the single best piece of business
02 Whats
advice that helped shape who you are now
and why?
It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. To many, this will sound
like an old cliché. But I believe that now more than ever this is the
most sound advice you can give anyone starting out in business. With
the Internet and the information age we live in today, knowledge is
at your fingertips. Everyone can learn new skills. Building genuine
connections, expanding your network, reaching out... that’s the
tough part! The same Internet that brings us so much information and
knowledge is alienating us from ourselves, and each other.
is the biggest mistake you have ever
03 What
made in business and what did you learn
from it?
Throughout the years I’ve made my share of business mistakes, so it’s
hard to pick just the one. If I think back on what has slowed down the
growth of my business the most, I’d have to say it was the choices I
made when hiring staff. For a long time I didn’t hire A players but had
the (unconscious) habit of hiring mediocre people instead. Having
these people on staff made it hard to delegate, get projects done
well or on time, often resulting in me having too much work and not
enough time to spend on growing the business. Once I figured out
what was going on I decided to only hire A+ players from then on.
This has had a tremendous effect on my business.
04 What’s your definition of success?
Success is holistic concept. It’s easy to mistake material possessions,
money, praise for success, especially in a world that is used to measure
it that way. I believe that success is as much a feeling, a way of being,
as it is a destination. You’re not successful if you’re unhappy, even if
you have millions to show for. You’re not successful if you’re happy,
but keep on failing at any business you’re starting. Success therefore
means both personal and professional achievement in the form of
actiontaking, growth, financial return. But also selfcare, selflove, and
alignment with your personal desires, and what makes you happy.
