For honor also means
being an adult and
assuming your
responsibilities.
Opening to our own inner honor requires an interesting mix of
strength and sensitivity and is an ideal way, specially for us men, to
start generating empathy towards others. It also is an ideal tool to do
business effectively, since it cuts through a lot of crap and allows for
negotiations to be quick and straight. But even more importantly, it
is a path towards allowing our hearts to open so that compassion can
begin flowing from it, for compassion, the sharing of others’ suffering,
requires a massive amount of inner strength. And finally it is a tool
for claiming responsibility for our actions towards others, whether
it be family, business partners or simple strangers. Many times our
actions will be mistaken, of course, but honor also means having the
humility to accept our mistakes and take corrective actions. In all of
these aforementioned ways, Honor becomes a true spiritual path to
be manifested in the world. In this sense I wish I could say I am the
most honorable guy around. I am not. But I try hard allow honor to
flow from my heart and into all aspects of my life.
I will end by saying that, as a businessman, I have discovered that, more
unwittingly than not, I have been following in my father’s footsteps.
My partners trust me and, in the same way, I completely trust my
partners, and many times I have made deals just with a handshake. I
only do business with people who, in some form or another, adhere to
a strong inner code of values and thus, like my father, I (mostly) do not
need written contracts to strike a deal. Of course sometimes contracts
are needed, but even in those occasions it is easy to negotiate because
there is never a doubt in my mind that, whether it be on paper or just
with a handshake, the wisest and honorable choice is always to go for
the win-win solution. And this makes my life very simple!
