As we go to print, there is no movement in the endless talks that apparently continue at Stormont. Meanwhile, Civil Servants are swanning around Stormont Estate in chauffeur driven cars, the abortion debate is heating up: the Conservative/DUP Pact is being challenged in the High Court and Brexit appears to mean a dog’s breakfast! The problem with most of these issues is simply that the atmosphere of uncertainty continues to create problems for business. Not knowing whether we have a government in place able to propose and pass a budget, let alone manage the required changes in health and education, creates real issues for us in business. And the continued lack of local government responsibility also results in our being poorly represented in Brexit negotiations. Northern Ireland and its border with the Republic of Ireland continues to be a primary aspect of the ongoing talks, yet no local voice is heard in the discussions. Indeed, at times we appear to be better represented by the Dublin Government in the negotiations not quite the result Northern Ireland’s Brexiteers might have anticipated! Meanwhile, Northern Ireland business leaders are taking responsibility for speaking out on all things Brexit and you’ll find two pieces of interest in your Business First: Ian Sheppard, Chair of the IoD in Northern Ireland, page, 20 and Pamela McCreedy, Chair Chartered Accountants Ulster Society, page 40.
