A Lot of Brakes
George and Wanda Thurston’s 1971 Ford Pinto Runabout was an accident.
Since George was working in Oklahoma, Wanda was (alone) with her son
living in Apple Valley, working in Adelanto, and for the first time, making
all her own decisions. She shared with her son her 1988 Ford Tempo. He
would take his mom to work, and have the car for his own job interviews,
and girl friend stuff; you know the grind. While out with a friend, a lady
ran a stop sign slamming into her son which totaled the Tempo. A couple
thousand is all the insurance would pay, so she was able to pay off the
Tempo, and proceeded to search for something decent to get back and
forth to work for as little money as possible. An ad in the classifieds of the
High Desert Dispatch jumped out before her. A ‘71 Ford Pinto Runs
$300.00. She called to tell the man if he can drive it to her she’ll take it.
Within several hours the man pulled in the driveway. Yep! He did drive it
all the way from down the hill, somewhere, and it was all there, but it did
need brakes...a lot of brakes. The guy at Good Year ask her how much
money she had, and (of course) that’s exactly how much it cost for brakes,
$450.00. She does know now that brakes don’t really cost that much even
if it is a Pinto.
