Are you thinking, where has the year gone? We can hardly believe we’re writing articles about Christmas either! Being a parent you’re pulled in lots of different directions, there’s so much to do balancing your family, you and things you do outside the home with your values and expectations. The festive season, whilst always busy, is a great time to re-connect with the joy of simply being with family, whether they’re related my blood or the people you choose to be with because they make you happy. So give your self a break, accept that things aren’t always magazine perfect and take a moment to enjoy everything and everyone around you over the festive season.
As well as some ideas to make the season extra festive, read on to find out more about our new playgroup that bridges the generations (page xx), find out what we’ve been doing this year and upcoming events for you to enjoy and read all about how volunteering for our local NCT branch can bring benefits to you and lots of other people too.
Also, the Surrey County Council consultation on the future of children’s centres is out now. Read about our response and how you can have your say (page 6). And with the application deadline for primary school places from starting September 2019 we’ve asked some parents how they chose the right school (page 15). by Sarah & Debs - Newsletter Editors

2018 is coming to a close and this year has been characterised by some interesting and intense weather and events. The beast from the East provided lots of cold and snow, whereas this summers’ heatwave took us to the opposite end of the weather spectrum. Trumps’ tweets and Brexit battles have dominated the news, but the NCT has also made headlines with its Hidden Half campaign to drive awareness and improve support, of post-natal mental health struggles.
Mothers – and Fathers – often feel they have to keep doubts and insecurities, worries and fears to themselves in order to be seen as good parents. Often they may not even realise that they are struggling, and would benefit with a bit of the right kind of support.
This and other worthwhile campaigns are just some of the things our local branch fundraising helps to provide and the resulting debates in parliament on improving the 6-week check, made us all proud to be part of the charity driving this initiative.
This year, our branch has been going from strength to strength, thanks to the dedication and contributions of our local volunteers and the many local businesses who support us.
Since January we have run lots of great events, alongside our regular popular groups and local activities. Check out our website or join our Facebook group to stay up to date with all the upcoming events including our xmas parties!
Nearly New Sale bargains!
After a 2 year hiatus, we have held not one, but two, successful Nearly New Sales (NNS) at Magna Carta School in Staines, selling clothes, books, toys and equipment, for children up to 9 years. These NNS are a great way to snap up some amazing bargains and also a great way to clear out any pre-loved (but now unwanted) kids clothes and toys. Keep your eyes peeled for the next one in Spring 2019.
As always, it wouldn’t have been possible without a fantastic group of volunteers! Thanks to everyone who came along and helped and thanks to everyone who came along as a buyer or seller.
If you fancy getting involved as a seller or volunteer at the next sale, just get in touch via our Branch email address [email protected] or via our Facebook page.
