This darter’s dart game has come a long way in three short years. She
has had success at the local, regional, and international levels. This
past year she faced a challenge that many darters, especially us male
players, give little or no consideration. She continued to be an up and
coming darter during and after a pregnancy.
Christina and Tim Byrd became the parents of an 8 pound baby girl,
Ashton, a few weeks ago. She also has an eight year old daughter,
Crisdan. They live in Wetumpka, Alabama, and she is currently at
home taking care of the newborn. Let’s learn just how she has dealt
with pregnancy and motherhood.
Christina Dunn
Pacer: First of all, congratulations to you and Tim on the birth
of Ashton. I understand it wasn’t
a piece of cake.
Christina: Thanks Tom. She is
beautiful, but it really was pretty
tough. When I first got pregnant,
I was still working. Then I started
having real bad morning sickness,
so when I had a chance to play
darts, I didn’t feel like playing.
About halfway through my pregnancy, I felt better and started going out to the local blind draws. It
took me awhile to get used to playing without loosening up with a
drink or two. Then, strangely, my
big belly kind of helped my balance
and I started shooting really good!
I was playing really good and then
I had some serious complications
and I had to be hospitalized and
put on bed rest for two months.
Finally, they decided to do a C section at 37 weeks--and she was born
a healthy baby girl. I’ll tell you,
lying around for two months really
took me out of my dart game! A
few weeks ago I subbed for Tim’s
partner in league. The next day
I couldn’t figure out why my arm
was killing me while I was carrying the baby in her car seat. Tim
was like, girl you just played 19
games of darts yesterday, you’re
just not used to it yet.
Pacer: Just what are your plans
for the future?
Christina: We went and played
in Huntsville over the weekend,
and I played pretty good, but just
not consistent. I had one singles
match where I won the diddle to
start the last game and opened up
with a ton 80. I kind of screwed up
and got into my own head. I got so
excited about the ton 80 that my
darts just fell apart, and I lost the
game. I will eventually get more
consistent and get the mental part
18
of the game back. For awhile I’ll
probably just sub a few times, play
some local tournaments, and once
in awhile go out of town.
Pacer: It is a little hard with a
new baby.
Christina: My mom, Chris, said,
“Go to tournaments, I’ll watch the
baby.” The problem is, she will
watch her and spoil her rotten!
(Both laughing.)
Pacer: You have accomplished a
lot in three short years. How did
it all get started?
Christina: I was working, bartending and waiting tables. I was
kind of bored and picked up some
house darts and started fooling
around. I got to where I was hitting some really good stuff and I
was like wow, I can be pretty good
at this. The next thing I know
