Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Assessing Whether PPE is Suitable for the Job (PPE) is equipment used or clothing worn by employees to reduce the risk of injury or illness from exposure to workplace hazards. Using special equipment or clothing to help protect a person can be a risk control measure to implement in conjunction with other control measures. Examples of work that may require the use of PPE include: • wearing high visibility vests while working near machinery or traffic • wearing protective footwear while working in a workshop • wearing a sun hat while working outdoors • wearing earmuffs while working near loud machinery • wearing safety glasses while working with machinery. Tips to assess suitability of PPE Ask the following questions to assess whether the PPE you have chosen is suitable for the task: What is the hazard the PPE is aiming to manage? Does the PPE fit the specific requirements of the job? Does the PPE hinder or obstruct the worker in safely performing another part of their job? Can the PPE be adjusted to fit each worker adequately without reducing its functionality? Does more than one piece of PPE need to be worn at one time for the task? If so, does the PPE interfere with the functionality of the other? Does the worker have any health or fitness issues that affect the type of PPE that should be worn? Is the PPE suitable for the specific conditions of the working environment?
