Walk for Unity

Uniting young Malaysians through walking in university campus

Walk for Unity 2017 was an event that gathers national secondary school students and university students to walk together on this auspicious day. The event was held on 25 February 2017 at University of Malaya with the objectives to encourage students from national secondary schools to communicate with students of different races, and to encourage university students to cultivate a sense of unity and responsibility among the younger students.

This event which involved only girls was the first of its series to promote unity in a diverse culture. A total of two (2) schools participated in this series, which are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Abdul Samad, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Vivekananda. The event was also participated by both undergraduate and postgraduate University of Malaya students.

Students began walking at 8.30am, and they were guided by our University of Malaya UNESCO Club (UMUC) members, accompanied by their school teachers. The volunteers were on standby at three (3) designated checkpoints throughout the journey to give them a mark as they have passed that checkpoint. The volunteers led the way from UM Central to Rimba Ilmu.

Rimba Ilmu, a Malay word, which means “The Forest of Knowledge” was established in 1974 and occupies an area of 80 hectares. Rimba Ilmu is a tropical botanical garden, modelled after a rain forest garden concept which emphasises the flora of the Malaysian and Indonesian region. At Rimba Ilmu, the students and teachers were brought into a site visit within the Rimba Ilmu where they had the opportunity to witness a “mini jungle” in the University of Malaya.
