Garry said, “I have been fortunate over the past four years to have been involved in this project,
with the last two years sharing the responsibility of being Regional Co-ordinators for the Walsall,
Lichfield, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield areas with my wife Julia,” said Garry Welborn, MIS
Manager.
“Last year, with the help of over 140 volunteers, we were able to dispatch 9,200 shoe
boxes to children in Romania.
“I would like to thank staff and learners who supported the project this year and got involved in
what is a real and tangible way of making a difference to children less fortunate than our own.”
The operation started in 1992 when pictures of children in the orphanages in Romania were
broadcast in Britain.
The images had such an impact on one man in Chesterfield that he decided to collect clothes and
toys from neighbours and businesses in his community and deliver them to children in Romania.
The charity Samaritan's Purse took the initiative over and it has grown from there.
The shoeboxes that have been collected at the college will be dispatched to the OCC warehouse
in Aldridge and will be sent to Belarus on Friday 13 December 2013.
