Area Events Round-up
It’ s been a busy and interesting year for our Area Councils.
Thanks to all our volunteers for their hard work organising engaging and enlightening events, which have fostered connection, learning and growth for members.
Here are some recent highlights:
200 Years of Railways in the Western Region from Paddington to Penzance
To mark 200 years since the Stockton & Darlington Railway, Paul Stanford and Robin White of the South West and Wales area council presented a virtual talk on the region’ s railway journey, its rise, fall, and revival. They traced developments from 1825 to today’ s growth, including CIRO’ s impact since 2000.
Remembering Chris Tibbets: A Life on the Railway
We are saddened by the passing of Chris Tibbets, who will be remembered for his professionalism, leadership and warmth, and will be deeply missed. Chris was the former Chair of the Midlands Area Council and was a dedicated railway leader holding roles including MD of Virgin Trains.
Bristol Temple Meads Station Roof Tour
CIRO members toured the Bristol Temple Meads roof refurbishment site, guided by Network Rail’ s James Shelley and Taziker’ s Lee Gardiner. They explored the restored ironwork, new glazing, and improved lighting. The project blends heritage and sustainability, with completion due in 2026.
Family Fun Days
The Midlands, North West & Wales, North East and Irish Area Councils all held family fun days which give a chance for members to get together and socialise. This year’ s visits were to the Crich Tramway Village, National Waterways Museum, the Weardale Railway and the Downpatrick and County Down Railway.
Thank you to Neil Worthington & Andrew Welch
The North West & Wales Chair Chris Mackenzie thanks Neil and Andrew for their outstanding contributions to the Council, as they both step down. Both have played key roles in organising and championing events, bringing experience, dedication, and humour that greatly supported the Council’ s work and strengthened its connection with members.
