A further project delivered by FSIP within CP6 was the mainline trial of Project FRoOG ( Freight Resilience of Operating Geometry ), which took place at Eastleigh on the Wessex Route in March 2023 . This track measurement equipment mounted to a mobile elevating work platform ( MEWP ) can operate in challenging weather conditions to measure track geometry on Network Rail and customer infrastructure . This can provide early indications of potential issues and ensure that maintenance efforts are deployed exactly where and when they are needed .
FSIP was also able to part fund safety improvements at sites owned or leased by external stakeholders to Network Rail , particularly in terms of security and safe walking . Beyond the money spent , another key benefit of FSIP has been the crafting of a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement at sector level on freight safety . The realisation of a targeted fund was able to reignite conversations and these dialogues have grown and developed beyond the limits of the fund itself to seek alternative ways to implement and improve .
There is more to come in Control Period 7 ( 2024-2029 ) with a further £ 17m allocated to FSIP in the regulatory settlement . This will continue the work of the CP6 work-streams with a renewed focus on innovation as well as continual yard improvements where they are most needed . FSIP closely aligns with the principles of the Freight Safe Programme and is always seeking ideas and concepts so if you have any or would like to know more about FSIP and what it can deliver please get in touch through CIRO .
