8 B ULK D ISTRIBUTOR Depot Services September/October 2017 Kärcher rises to HTC’s challenge B elgium-based HTC is a specialist in tank cleaning and treatment of industrial wastewater, with depots for tank cleaning in Herenthout, Liège, Antwerp and Seneffe. Within port of Antwerp’s chemical cluster HTC has grown to become the preferred partner of many companies. As a consequence, the capacity of the existing cleaning site at Scheldelaan in Antwerp had become inadequate. So, the company decided to invest in a second facility for tank cleaning, situated some 500m from the existing location. Following the site purchase late last year, Kärcher Benelux was assigned the demanding task of installing a complete tank cleaning system. The technical aspects of the project were completed in June, followed by full installation. Prestigious project The new location was christened HTC-Container Services and is dedicated to cleaning intermodal tank containers. In addition to safety and quality, forward planning and a smooth lead time are essential for cleaning ISO tanks. Moreover, the diverse global companies that make up HTC’s customer base have varying demands when it comes to cleaning their equipment. So, it became clear that high demands would be made on the new installation and on the partner responsible for delivery of the cleaning technology. Kärcher became that partner. The assignment was clear: various types of tank container had to be cleaned internally, either wholly- or semi- automatically, with a high pressure system. The goal was to allow two tank containers to be cleaned simultaneously, and, depending on the type of impurities to be removed and degree of HTC and Kärcher’s tank cleaning department worked in close collaboration to produce a custom-made system contamination, a choice could be made between various wash programs (cold or hot water, number of cleaning heads activated, four different cleaning agents, duration of the program, etc). The result is one installation with two wash bays, each with space for two containers. In addition, each wash bay has four cleaning heads. The operation is conducted through detailed touchscreen panels. Two double high pressure pumps each have a flow rate of 15,360 l/hr and a working pressure of 100 bar, frequency controlled. Moreover, the system comprises a fully automated water softener (with a capacity of 6 cbm/hr), eight automatic pneumatic metering pumps, automatic steam control valves, vacuum extraction, automatic washable sand filter and a stationary high pressure unit (capacity 6000 l/hr). Finally, there are a further 12 hose reels for differing connection points. For employees who need to work on top of the containers, there are harnesses with integrated fall protection. Kees Wagtmans, managing director of Kärcher Benelux, said of the installation: “I am very proud of the effort put in by our people from the tank and silo cleaning department to deliver this project. We are very happy to add this prestigious project to our reference list.” More services in Thailand A new full-service cleaning and repair facility has opened in Laem Chabang, Thailand’s main port. Joint venture partners Fusion Logistics and Stolt Tank Containers officially opened FSTS (Fusion Stolt Tank Services) earlier this year, with technical start up in mid-May. The opening ceremony was attended by more than 100 representatives from key Thailand- based shippers, producers and importers. FSTS sits adjacent to an existing LCTS refurbishing joint venture. The two facilities combine the best of in-service and heavy repairs available with premier quality cleaning and tank preparation, the partners stated. Some 10,000 sqm fully concreted of facility include 10 chemical cleaning bays, two fully segregated food grade bays (with isolated/ segregated cleaning system), eight survey bays and four periodic test bays. The food quality cleaning is designed specifically to meet the requirements of the rapidly growing food and food grade chemical producers in Thailand.
