Hong Kong-based container terminal operator Modern Terminals is collaborating with American firm Advanced Genomic Solutions ( AGS ) to design a corporate genomic testing option for its employees . AGS , with headquarters in both Hong Kong and Arizona , offers two DNA-based tests . The Health and Wellness Test will provide employees with an individualised report to help them understand how their genetics affect their diet , exercise and nutrition . The second is a Drug Sensitivity Test which informs the individual on which prescription drugs they can metabolise based on their unique DNA - helping them and their doctor to select the proper medications and dosages to get the best results and avoid a placebo effect , medical complications or likely addictive risks . Modern Terminals , which runs box facilities in Hong Kong ’ s Kwai Chung harbour and Da Chan Bay in mainland China , will offer both of these tests to its employees as a part of its Project FIT corporate wellness programme . Reports show that healthier , life-balanced employees are more productive . Two studies done by insurance giant Aetna and Harvard University , highlight health and financial advantages to incorporating genetic testing within a corporate wellness programme . Some 2,800 Aetna employees were enrolled in a wellness programme that provided a limited genetic screening test and monitored their progress over a year . The results were positive – the improved clinical results were associated with reductions in total health care costs of US $ 122 per participant each month , saving over $ 600,000 for those engaged in the programme . Harvard ’ s study measured the implementation of wellness programmes in the workplace and found that medical costs decreased by $ 3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness initiatives . “ Since 2012 , we ’ ve helped employers and thousands of employees with genetic testing in the United States and Asia ,” said Lance Bennett , co-founder of AGS . “ Such testing services can decrease total healthcare costs for the company and the employee . We ’ re excited to help Modern Terminals employees improve their personal health which in turn helps the company ’ s workplace productivity and reduces missed days due to health reasons .” “ Our number one priority is the health and safety of our employees ,” said Modern Terminals managing director Peter Levesque . “ Last year we launched our first corporate wellness initiative called Project Fit , to promote the personal health and wellbeing of our employees through exercise , diet and education . We believe that adding the AGS Genomic Testing option to our menu of employee wellness offerings will add a new dimension in helping our team members live healthier lives .”
