10 BULKDISTRIBUTOR Road Tankers September/October 2016 Abbey Logistics scoops British New twist Sugar contract following MBO deal for recycling A containers bbey Logistics Group, the UK’s largest provider of bulk food transport services, has won a long-term deal to manage British Sugar’s bulk sugar movements across Great Britain. The new contract follows the decision announced by Suttons Tankers in May to end its eight-year relationship with British Sugar in order to concentrate on the hazardous chemicals, gases and fuels sectors. After a competitive tender process, British Sugar selected Abbey based on experience in the food sector and the company’s understanding of the nature of the market. Abbey’s strong maintenance and depot network, allowing maximum efficiency by reducing vehicle downtime, was identified as a perfect match for British Sugar’s needs. Sugar will be transported in bulk granulated sugar tanks and liquid tankers from four state-of-the-art processing plants in the UK, strategically located to reduce the mileage from farm to factory for processing. British Sugar is the UK’s leading sugar producer, supplying one million tonnes per year to the food industry and supermarkets. Abbey specialises in bulk food grade logistics, operating the UK’s largest fleet of dedicated food grade road tankers. This contract will see the company taking responsibility for transport planning and delivery services. The deal was agreed after Abbey Logistics Group CEO Steve Granite led a management buy-out of the company, supported by an undisclosed investment from NorthEdge Capital. Abbey Logistics is based in Liverpool and operates from nine UK sites, employing more than 450 staff. Set up over 25 years ago, the company initially specialised in the liquid food ingredients transportation market, with more recent diversification into the bulk powder market, palletised transport and warehousing under the leadership of Granite. Turners of Soham acquires UK’s second-largest container operator L eading UK logistics group Turners of Soham has acquired Felixstowe-based Goldstar Transport, further expanding its presence within the container industry. The acquisition follows that of MacIntyre Transport earlier this year and brings the total Turner Group operation to 750 owned vehicles and 450 dedicated subcontractors working daily on the containers side. The Group will now have over 1750 vehicles operating across its three core divisions – Temperature Controlled, Tankers and Containers. The Group’s annual turnover will increase by £95 million to approaching £400 million. Paul Day, Managing Director at Turners, stated: “I’m incredibly pleased to have been given the opportunity to purchase Goldstar. Goldstar is the second largest container operator in the UK and will give our Group a growing presence in this important sector in our industry.” Goldstar currently operates 350 own vehicles and a similar number of dedicated subcontractors from 10 locations across the UK. It will continue to be run as a separate company and managed by its existing Board of Directors. Goldstar Managing Director Matthew Ashworth said: “The support of Turners will be hugely beneficial to the long-term success of Goldstar, its customers and staff. I am excited by the future opportunities we’ll have, and I look forward to continuing to drive the business forward with my fellow Directors.” Day added: “Goldstar is very well managed, remains customer focused and has achieved consistent growth of the last 18 years. This opportunity further strengthens our service levels and flexibility to our existing and potential customer base within this important industry sector. Goldstar has an extremely loyal workforce and one which Turners looks forward to supporting and working with in the future.” ws o l nF I e r e o ati v no n Wh T o help empty wood chips from containers in a recycling application, Hyster has developed a custom pivot attachment for its ReachStacker. “The customer works in recycling and tr ansports containers of wood chips using lorries and trains. Their challenge was finding an efficient way both to empty 20ft containers of wood chips into the yard at their recycling terminal and transfer the bulk goods from one container into another,” said Chris van de Werdt, Commercial Manager for Hyster Big Trucks. The Hyster Special Engineering Department developed a solution where a custom container pivot attachment was added to a RS45-31 CH ReachStacker to allow the containers to be lifted and pivoted. This tipping motion allows the correct flow of wood chip from the container, making it far easier to empty. “The attachment is capable of pivoting containers up to 60° and is designed to carry the containers off-centre to enhance the stability of the entire ReachStacker so it can empty the wood chip in one simple, well-controlled and efficient movement,” explained van de Werdt.
