Big data has been much trumpeted as the next step change in supply chain management . However , few might have seen its potential in optimising maintenance & repair ( M & R ) services . Yet , Hamburg-based Hoyer Group did just that . The bulk logistics specialist has replaced its previous M & R system with a new M & R module from logistics software specialist Adaption . The software ensures that Hoyer can analyse and predict tank container M & R activities by using big data . Hoyer ’ s fleet currently numbers more than 39,000 tank containers . Depending on their type of use , they are regularly inspected for damage and necessary maintenance by specialised repair shops . “ We have decided to replace the previous M & R system because it no longer met our requirements of modern tank container M & R administration ,” explained Peter Jürging , CIO . “ Our previous software system was not detailed enough for comprehensive analysis on our M & R activities .” The new software allows Hoyer to collect more information about specific maintenance or repair items necessary . It also keeps track of exactly which component needs to be repaired , how it has to be repaired and the location of the repair on the tank .
Predicting maintenance
Because of the big amount of data Hoyer has available , the analyses can be made very specific . By combining the transport , maintenance and repair data , the logistics firm will be able to predict trends . “ By collecting and combining data , we can make very precise analyses . When statistics show that a certain type of container repeatedly needs maintenance , we can take proactive actions to

With this knowledge , we can optimise our M & R costs and turnaround times ,” Jürging continued . “ In addition , Hoyer can tailor M & R and modification programmes for dedicated services to satisfy the needs of customers .” The repair workshops and Hoyer M & R representatives communicate via the M & R portal . The workshops provide estimates , after which a Hoyer M & R employee evaluates the estimate and approves . After the approval , the workshop is notified accordingly . Communication via the portal makes it possible to work much more efficient and faster . In the past , the workshops and M & R employees had continuously to mail and call , which took more time on both sides . By using the available data , Hoyer can determine the tank container that requires maintenance , in order to prevent additional repair costs in the future . “ Not only does the analysis of data ensure a cost reduction . Another part of the M & R module is the contracts and rates system ,” added Jürging . Toon Schilder , managing director of Adaption added : “ All price agreements of Hoyer are included in the contracts and rates systems . When employees of the workshops make an estimate in the M & R portal , the agreed rates are automatically shown . This way of working reduces many incorrect data entries . In the end , the evaluation of all data and rate schedules can be used to negotiate competitive rate agreements .” Employees at Hoyer ’ s M & R department are very satisfied with the new software . Jürging said : “ The software is very user-friendly and is used all over the world . There is a clear method of working defined in clear workflows and processes . Especially the speed of the software is an advantage . In the meantime , we already have over 10,000 estimates in the system and the number is rising . In order to analyse all data properly , a fast and transparent system was required which we found in Adaption ’ s maintenance and repair module .”

Last year Groninger Cleaning Systems of Rotterdam , through its Asia subsidiary Groninger Asia Pte Ltd , achieved another couple of firsts for the group . In June a contract was signed to build Malaysia ’ s first multi-purpose ISO tank container cleaning depot in Port Klang for Premier Path Tank Solutions . The company already had one cleaning depot located in Kuantan on the Eastern Seaboard and is considering other Malaysia and SE Asia locations . The new Port Klang depot layout features both static and drive through cleaning bays which are initially designed to clean a range of natural latex ’ s and oleo chemicals . With the facility commissioned in April this year , the design allows for a doubling of cleaning capacity with additional cargo residues targeted for cleaning . The turn-key Groninger equipment package , providing state-of-theart European cleaning technology , includes a latex cleaning unit and a complete wastewater treatment plant featuring both physical chemical and biological processing . India has been recognised for some years as a potential growth market for Groninger but now that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’ s ‘ Clean India ’ programme is gaining traction , enquiries to improve tank cleaning services have reached a new level of interest . After visits to Groninger references in the Netherlands , investors in Bayarea LLP were confident enough to purchase a generation 2 cleaning system for a facility in India ’ s western seaboard port of Hazira . This rapidly growing region in Gujarat will find a ready market for the European style cleaning services that became available from mid- 2018 from the Bayarea depot . Despite being more than 18 months ago , the devastating explosion in Tianjin has not been forgotten by Chinese authorities and tank containers are progressively being regarded as a safe mode of bulk liquid transport and are carrying an increasing amount of cargo for domestic use . With approvals being sought or provided for rail transport and waterway carriage for tanks , Groninger said its attendance in the ITCO pavilion at the Transport Logistic China exhibition in Shanghai in May generated as much interest from mainland Chinese customers as the period since the last exhibition in 2016 . Back in Europe , Groninger supplied an integrated system to clean food containers with product residues that generate a wide range of aromas at the largest production site of Döhler in Darmstadt . Döhler GmbH is a global producer , marketer and provider of technology-driven natural ingredients , ingredient systems and integrated solutions for the food and beverage industry . In recent years Groninger supplied custom-built systems to Döhler facilities in Russia , Turkey , The Netherlands and Brazil . Food products like aromas are sometimes difficult to clean and especially the intensive odours of some aromas tend to adhere to the containers . Döhler ’ s engineering team had been searching for a suitable and more innovative solution , which led to close cooperation between three companies : Döhler GmbH , Groninger Cleaning Systems and Anseros Klaus Nonnenmacher GmbH from Tübingen to meet the challenge . By implementing a recirculation system using hot demineralized water , a cleaning agent and ozonised water , the intensive odour was removed much faster than in previous methods of cleaning . The system capacity was designed to meet growing market demand for aromas and related products .

Global-Talke has officially opened its new tank cleaning facility in the Spanish city of Zaragoza . In 2016 , the joint venture between Zaragoza-based Global Spedition and Germany ’ s Alfred Talke decided to expand its business service with a new tank cleaning station . This was done in collaboration with Groninger Cleaning Systems , with the objective of being an all-in-one service provider for the food and chemical transport sector . The cleaning station was designed for cleaning of road tankers , ISO tank containers and swap bodies . The new facility has two food cleaning bays , fully separated from a chemical cleaning bay . All bays are ready for automated cold and hot water cleaning and sterilisation . The bays are equipped with a SGF-accredited Cleaning Guard system for continuous logging of
