14 BULKDISTRIBUTOR Components No power, no problem H ow do you transfer liquids from drums and barrels safely and cleanly when there is no electrical or air supply available to drive the pump motor? Even manual, handoperated pumps may not be an option. Michael Smith Engineers says a lithium ion cordless rechargeable drum pump motor developed by drum pump specialists Finish Thompson (FTI) is the answer. The S6 12-Volt rechargeable 2-speed drum pump motor can be used with any of the Finish Thompson EF polypropylene, pure polypropylene/ PVDF or stainless steel tube sets. The result is a versatile and portable option for remote or difficult-to-access drum emptying applications. The cordless design makes it easy to transfer fluids virtually anywhere, with maximum fade-free performance, equivalent to a corded AC powered motor. The latest lithium ion batteries have a much higher energy density compared to nickel cadmium (NiCd) or nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries so the pumps can operate effectively for up to 50 minutes between charges. Also, lithium ion batteries have no ‘memory’ effect which May/June 2016 The cordless design of the S6 makes it easy to transfer fluids virtually anywhere means they can be recharged at any state of their discharge. The S6 rechargeable drum pump motor has a solid-state electronic control circuit that monitors all aspects of the motor and battery pack to ensure reliable operation and long-life, while dual cooling fans help to improve the performance and life of the battery pack. Multiple charging options include 115V or 230V AC and for mobile applications an automobile or commercial vehicle 12V port option will suffice. For permanent charging locations, a moulded wall hanger is available which stores the charger unit internally. On the low speed setting, the pump motor will run for approximately 50 minutes between charges and the high speed setting, it will run for around 20 minutes. The S6 is said to be an ideal option for transferring fluids from drums, barrels and carboys where a power supply is not available, is too distant from the point of pumping, or where fluids need transferring in remote, isolated locations. www.michael-smith-engineers.co.uk Gauging the thickness D orchester, UK-based Tritex NDT has launched a new thickness gauge. The Multigauge 5650 Surveyor, based on the existing Multigauge 5600, has new features including the option to exchange the probe and the gauge automatically switches to single echo mode for measuring GRP, plastic or uncoated metal. The gauge also measures metal thickness through coatings of up to 20mm thick, to give the same performance as the Multigauge 5600. In addition, either probe can also be used in echo – echo mode, if required, by selecting the option from the keypad during measurement, negating the need for special probes. The gauge has a large modern colour display and an easy to use clear graphic menu. It was designed in line with Tritex’s concept of simple, accurate and robust. Intuitive menus allow navigation while the gauge has added features to improve performance. For metal measurement, the gauge uses the multiple echo technique to ignore coatings up to 20mm thick and just measures the metal substrate. No grinding or removal of the coatings is required, significantly reducing preparation time and ultimately saving both time and money when carrying out inspections. All probes have intelligent probe recognition (IPR), which automatically adjusts settings in the gauge when connected, resulting in a perfectly matched probe and gauge for enhanced performance. Also, the automatic measurement verification system (AMVS) used with multiple echo ensures only true measurements are displayed, even on the most heavily corroded metals. An optional leather case protects the gauge in even the harshest environments. Only single crystal probes are used, which have a number of advantages when measuring on curved and corroded surfaces. The new Multigauge 5650 is supplied as a complete kit, ready to use, with a three year warranty and free calibration for the life of the gauge. www.tritexndt.com World class. and Worth it.
