Globalstar, Ovinto track Sabic’s Sweet contract
for Aurizon
tanks
G
lobalstar is teaming up with Ovinto to equip Sabic’s
European fleet of 500 rail tank cars with satellitebased tracking and monitoring technology.
The European operation of the Saudi company uses its
European rail fleet to transport chemicals. By selecting the ATEX
Ovinto Sat M2M asset tracking system, Sabic is looking to take
a next step in its focus on safety in chemicals production and
transport. Additionally, the new technology will help Sabic to
optimise its supply chain operations.
Because Ovinto Sat relies on Globalstar’s next generation LEO
satellite constellation, Sabic will benefit from the network’s
reliability and reach to obtain timely, accurate information
about the status of every asset in its fleet. This will help ensure
that Sabic, as well as other stakeholders, have immediate
access to data in order to act faster. Meanwhile, Sabic is able to
track each vehicle on its journey in real time so it can have an
accurate understanding of delivery times. In this way, Sabic will
immediately know whether a rail tank has been loaded or
unloaded or is ready to be redeployed.
“Sabic is a major provider of petrochemicals with customers
who use our chemicals and plastics for many different
applications, said Judith Kleinen, category manager land
transport & spot shipping supply chain, chemicals at Sabic.
“One of the transport means we use is our fleet of rail tank
cars. Keeping track of a large fleet of these cars, dispersed all
over Europe, is crucial. Our rail tanks contain all sorts of
materials, so it is absolutely critical that we have the ability to
track and monitor their status and their contents at all times.
“Thanks to Ovinto Sat and Globalstar, we are in an even
better position to service our customers and suppliers and all
the other stakeholders in the supply chain in order to get the
materials they need when they need them and to be assured
that our fleet is being used as efficiently as possible,” she
concluded.
The ATEX Ovinto Sat system provides oil, gas and chemical
industry customers with details about cargo being transported
and its condition, including pressure and temperature, whether
it is in the correct location, or has been impacted due to a crash
or derailment. The provider says satellite is the preferred option
for such communications due to its availability, reliability and
low power consumption compared with GSM.
At the heart of Ovinto Sat is Globalstar’s low power, tiny STX3
chipset. Since it is battery powered, Ovinto Sat enables
customers to monitor hazardous materials in unpowered
environments, including rail tanks and tank containers. Because
of its very low power consumption, the Ovinto Sat battery can
last up to eight years. The system collates data from various
sensors and GPS in each of Sabic’s rail tanks and sends it
securely by satellite to the customer headquarters at regular
user-defined intervals.
“Sabic’s choice to install Ovinto Sat in all if its rail tank car
fleet in Europe is a strong endorsement of the solution and its
ability to monitor remote assets wherever they may be,” said
Corry Brennan, Simplex regional sales manager, EMEA, at
Globalstar. “When materials are being transported across
Europe it is critical that the location of assets is always known,
as well as whether those assets and their contents face risks.
Only satellite can deliver continuous, reliable, power-efficient
connectivity with these assets in order to ensure safety but also
to help maximise operational efficiencies.”
The strengths of using satellite were backed up by Frederick
Ronse, Ovinto CEO. “To ensure efficient and reliable transport
of chemical ma terials across vast distances, uninterrupted
monitoring is critical,” he commented. “Relying on GSM alone
simply cannot guarantee this connectivity. Now, not only will
SABIC be able to know exactly where their assets are, they can
help ensure these assets are performing better and being used
efficiently.”

A
ustralian rail operation Aurizon has expanded its relationship
with Wilmar Sugar Australia Limited with the signing of a new
haulage agreement.
The two year agreement will see Aurizon haul approximately 245,000
tonnes a year of bulk sugar from the Proserpine Mill to Queensland Sugar
Limited at Mackay Harbour and 60,000 tonnes of molasses from the
Burdekin mills to Port of Townsville effective from January this year.
The new accord is in addition to the existing 1.2 million tonnes of bulk
sugar contract Aurizon has with Wilmar in North Queensland’s Burdekin
region.
Aurizon EVP commercial & marketing Mauro Neves said the rail firm was
delighted to reach agreement on a new contract with Wilmar, which
extends a relationship dating back more than 20 years.
“The contract guarantees rail capacity to Wilmar, provides the company
with an efficient rail service from mill to port and meets our needs
commercially as we grow our business,” he said. “Sugar plays an important
part in Aurizon’s diverse portfolio of bulk freight businesses in Queensland
which range from minerals and fertiliser to agricultural commodities and
livestock. Our commitment is to continue providing safe, quality, reliable
and efficient services which help Wilmar deliver its product to market.”
