Frequently Asked Questions
1. Does Habitat give away free houses to those in need?
No. Habitat is a "hand-up" rather than a "handout." Qualified Habitat homebuyers demonstrate the need for housing, the ability to pay the mortgage (held by Habitat) and the willingness to partner with Habitat's mission to bring people together to build homes, community and hope in the Roanoke Valley.
2. Does Habitat cater solely to refugee and minority families?
Habitat is an equal housing lender. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, handicap, or familial status. Besides, we are a proud Christian organization and Jesus loves ALL the little children!
3. Do you have to be a Christian to qualify for the Habitat program?
Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley is an organization built on the core principles of Christianity, but we do not prosletyze. That means that it absolutely not a requirement for Habitat homeowners to be Christians.
4. Who builds Habitat houses?
In short, YOU do! Volunteers from all around the valley and even outside of the state come to work on Habitat houses throughout the year. Over 80% of the work done on Habitat homes is done by dedicated volunteers.
