Malaysia takes a ‘leaf’ out of nature
University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) in Malaysia aims for green ratings
while taking design inspiration from the forest canopy and fern leaves.
The complexity of the configuration of the aluminium
cladding is to create the organic shape of the rainforest canopy.

Sarawak (UCTS) is the culmination of the
state of Sarawak’s vision in establishing a
world-class institution of higher learning to
spearhead the development and production
of technical human resource for the Sarawak
Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).
UCTS is committed to facilitating
student access to an affordable world-class
university education that nurtures creative
and entrepreneurial leaders through a broad
education in science and technology.
Located in the town of Sibu, Sarawak in
East Malaysia, one of the main gateways into
SCORE, UCTS’ campus, when completed,
will be equipped with the latest state-of-theart facilities to facilitate teaching, learning and
research activities necessary in the production
of graduates required by the industries within
SCORE.
UCTS will collaborate with Universiti
Kuala Lumpur, one of Malaysia’s leading
technical university with over 18,000 students
across the country, in areas like: automation
& industrial maintenance; machine building
& metal fabrication; product design &
precision manufacturing; information
technology; animation & multimedia; food
technology, chemical & bioengineering;
marine engineering; automobile engineering;
aviation engineering; electrical, electronics &
telecommunication; quality engineering &
industrial logistics; medical & allied health
sciences; business, entrepreneurship &
Islamic finance; oil & gas; built environment;
environmental design; civil engineering &
construction management.
The campus site which covers a total land
area of approximately 96.98 acres is situated
adjacent to the Old Sibu Airport Runway. It is
in an elongated shape with an organic form.
