Mayor Leeser speaks at EPAB General Meeting
It had been a number of years since a sitting Mayor came to speak to our association , and fortunately we experienced a visit and talk from Oscar Leeser . Mayor Leeser has been a friend of the industry , not because he gets a lot of money for his campaign or thinks we ’ re just a great group . He supports the industry because as a businessman he understands the economy and our chunk we make happen . He understands that El Paso is woefully burdened with not enough housing . Not enough affordable housing . Not enough rooftops to entice someone to start or bring a business into our community .
Mayor Leeser spoke about politics to us at the general meeting , sponsored by HUB . If you didn ’ t know the man , then you wouldn ’ t know that he is a self-made businessman .
The mayor immigrated to the United Staes from Mexico , at age eight not knowing a word of English . His mother Roberta would have been ninety-three on the week of our meeting . He talked a little about his struggles growing up , and his empathy for those seeking a life in the States . He spoke about his position helping the newest arrivals however he can . He is after all the mayor of the largest city on the US side of the southern border . He never imagined that he would be a crisis mayor , first with covid , now with the thousands at the border .
Mayor Leeser thanked us for doing all we do and our commitment to the community . Joining Mayor Leeser was Mayor ProTem Brian Kennedy , another friend of the boulder ’ s association . Kennedy took a moment to thank our members as well and promised to be a voice for industry on the city council .
The Association presented both with a new hardhat featuring our new logo .
