But can you specify how much your
annual budget is?
“About one million Swiss francs
(€
810,000). But from that we don't
have any specific amount budgeted.
We don’t have to put any money into
the member Federations or anything
like that. We’ve structured it very
well so that the national federations
cover certain expenses, which gives
them certain rights to income. This
means we can organise major
championships with very limited
costs for the world federation.”
So what does the WKF do with the
money that it takes in?
“We organise our development
courses all over the world.”
Tell us something about that,
because I don’t think people know very
much about it.
“Well we run about 50 courses
every year, on refereeing, coaching,
help with sports material, tatamis
and so on, but principally courses in
some African countries, some in
Asia too. None in Europe. The only
country in Europe that’s comparable
with the world’s disadvantaged
nations is Moldova. Also for the
senior world championships in
particular we have a grant scheme
for disadvantaged countries. We
help certain Federations that meet
the requirements by paying the air
