from NWIT to to BUas
“ A WALK THROUGH THE LAST 55 YEARS ”
History is there for us to discover the whole series of events from the last 55 years that led to the BUas that we know now . The word ‘ discover ’ in our slogan is expressed in the billowing sail in our logo and in the globe that has been travelling along in our trademark for quite some time now . It leads back to our roots . So , without further ado , let ’ s embark on the memory ship and discover the biggest milestones of our university .
1963 : NWIT and its beginning Mr . Sliepen , director of the Breda Tourist Information Office , had the idea of a school that trains students to become ‘ Toerist Officiers ’ ( Tourist Officers ). The school was to be a national scientific institute , consisting of a research department and a course program . As it was the first of its kind , the educational materials were mainly obtained through Mr . Sliepen ’ s own research efforts .
1966 : First lecture On the 5th of September 1966 the first lecture was held at Café ’ t Zuid at Grote Markt in Breda . Dr L . van Egeraat discussed the topic of ‘ Recreation in Noord- Brabant ’. NWIT started with 58 students and 12 staff members .
1977 : New location In 1977 , NWIT moved to a new building . The previous locations at Etnastraat , Haagweg , and Karnemelkstraat stood in marked contrast to the stylish premises at Sibeliuslaan - one of Breda ’ s upmarket neighborhoods .
1987 : Merger : NHTV On 1st August 1987 , NWIT and VAT ( Verkeersakademie Tilburg ) continued together under the name ‘ Nationale hogeschool voor toerisme en verkeer ’, soon abbreviated to ‘ NHTV ’. It was not until 1994 that the merging parties got together physically at the location of Mgr . Hopmansstraat 1 in Breda .
1990 : First Master program The first step in the plan to start offering master ’ s programs was taken in 1990 with the Master in European Tourism Management . In 1994 , NHTV
