Tikkie
“ I ’ ll send you a Тikkie later , no worries ”. “ Sorry , a ticket ? “ No , a Tikkie .”
Haven ’ t we all been there ? As the previous newcomers in Breda , we can say that we were once left confused after having a similar interaction . But what is that ? Tikkie is an online payment app that allows you to forward payment requests to people via WhatsApp or pay through a QR code . It has fully become a part of the Dutch language and people do not refer to Tikkie as only the app but more as an expression for exchanging money . There is a huge Tikkie culture in the Netherlands so it ’ s probably best to familiarize yourself with it . |
Biking on the canal
Most of us know how to ride a bike . Nothing too fascinating about it . But what if we tell you that you can ride a bike on the canal in Breda ? This is what we call fascinating . You are on a bike , and you are cycling on water . Who else could have thought of it but the Dutch ? We love it . Be sure to try it yourself !
Desert
You think things cannot get even better ? Well , think again . There is a desert in Breda . A little bit on the outskirts but nevertheless you can easily go there and enjoy nature . Search for “ Cadetten Kamp ” and thanks us later .
The Mastbos
The Galderse Meren is an area three kilometers south of Breda with a sandy beach , providing to its visitors with swimming , diving , and surfing opportunities . It

is located in the Mastbos and the lakes were a result of sand extraction for the construction of a highway . However , the water and beaches are clean and it is a famous place people enjoy hanging out at . It is the perfect change in one ’ s routine to go there for a day with friends or family there . There is no fixed place to eat , but there are stands selling ice cream , drink , and fries . A beach picnic is also a good idea , just keep in mind that barbecues are not allowed !
City elevation
Breda is three meters above sea level . Wow . Something that you have probably not thought about is the city elevation of Breda . For comparison , Eindhoven is 17 meters and almost a third of the Netherlands is situated below sea level .

Carnaval
For those of you who don ’ t know , the Carnival in Breda is the biggest party that you can attend while studying here . It is celebrated in the provinces of North Brabant and Limburg and during the carnival the city of Breda gets the name Kielegat . Almost every bar and restaurant participate , with thousands of people celebrating on the streets . There is music , dancing , and most importantly , you have to dress up ! The countdown for the next carnival has begun as the dates are already known – 26th , 27th , and 28th of February 2022 . It is an experience of a lifetime . Don ’ t miss it !
