Unit 6 - Critical Approaches to Creative Media Products
Task 4 - Games Review
Call of Duty (COD): Modern Warfare 3 is the sequel to its predecessors Modern Warfare 2 & Modern Warfare. Just like them this first person shooter and has attracted near-universal critical acclaim. Its slick, well-constructed and generously proportioned installment in one of the most revered military shooter franchises in history. People love and hate this franchise, however with the frustrating narrative style and addictive multiplayer Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward have created new polished instalment to the modern warfare series.
There's no denying that Modern Warfare 3 is all about the experience. It's a linear, corridor-based shooter and the game shows no remorse for this but it doesn’t need to because it is simply delightful. The campaign, which tells the story of multiple characters, some familiar and some new, is a series of explosive snapshots. It is almost as if you're thrown from one dramatic set piece to the next. COD is also renowned for its cut scenes at the beginning of campaign mission. It's taken a few years to get to the stage where this method works quite so flawlessly, but there's no denying that it has now been reached.
The new feature to Special Ops called Survival mode is an opportunity for Cooperative or Solo carnage. This game is about taking on waves of enemies and taking them down each round. Where the multiplayer is mainly based on using the best weapons and all-out war, this game requires strategy and stealth because you find it you don’t you could be easily overwhelmed by militia sent to kill all. In this game you earn money from kills and you unlock new weapons as well as gaining experience in special ops. Grenades and ammunition can only do so much so it is important to save and use funds wisely as you will find buying a sentry gun or investing in a squad of allies could be much more useful in defeating foes. The enemies in this game get stronger the more waves you survive. You can be faced with more than just militia there are attack dogs, suicide bombers, choppers and even Juggernauts.
In the online multiplayer mode it is pretty much the same as the predecessors. The online games you can partake in remain the same apart from one. The new “Kill Confirmed” is a newest addition to the multiplayer games. The game is just like Team Deathmatch where there are two teams against each other and the team with most points wins. Seems pretty simple right? Well not exactly because to gain Maximum points from a kill you must confirm it. Meaning that above the dead corpse of the dead player there is a name tag you must acquire in order to gain the points for the kill. Of course this only makes the game much harder and a lot more controversial. This is because the risk of becoming vulnerable to the eye of other players is much higher. You might be seen by another player trying to get the tag which they can then kill you confirming their kill and denying yours.
